This document describes how to customize the new dashboard feature and the Context Visibility Services in Identity Services Engine.
There are no specific requirements for this document.
The information in this document is based on these software and hardware versions:
Identity Service Engine version 2.1
In the previous versions of ISE, the information visible was minimal since there were fixed dashboards which provide fixed information about attributes in the network. There was no option to view the information in a graphical view.
ISE 2.1 gives you a lot of options to customize the dashboards and also to view the information you require in a user friendly graphical view. Two service components are provided to achieve this:
Context Directory Services
Dashboard Services allow you to configure and customize the dashboards in ISE. In previous verisons, there used to be only one dashboard with six dashlets showing a limited amount of information in the home page. In ISE 2.1, there can be multiple dashboards with customizable dashlets as per the requirements.
Context Directory Services is a new feature introduced in ISE 2.1. Traditionally, the ednpoints information can be accessed from Administration > Identity Management > Identities > Endpoints. The information shown here used to be very limited and not very user friendly as the number of tabs increased, it used to get more congested and hard to view certain colums. To alleviate these two disadvantages (the limited information and lack of user friendliness), Context Directory Service provides you with a new tab in ISE 2.1, Context Visibility. This section gives you ability to view almost every bit of information regarding the endpoints in the network and does it in a user friendly manner using charts and customizable columns.
Both of these services make use of the same dashlets to present the information, but in a customizable manner. A dashlet is a small window on a dashboard which has information about certain category with a set of attributes and a chart displaying information about those attributes. A sample dashlet is shown here :
Every dashlet has a title, set of categories of attributes, a button to open this dashlet in a new tab, a button to refresh the data and in some cases, a button to delete the dashlet from the dashboard as well. Almost all the dashlets have a circular chart which provides the information about the attributes of the selected category in percentages. A category can be selected by clicking on the set of attributes present in a dashlet below the title. Hovering over a section of the chart shows the number of endpoints associated with that attributes in the center of the chart. Clicking on a section of the chart opens up a new tab. In this tab, relevant dashlets and a tabular grid with all the information about those endpoints associated with that attribute are shown.
Customize Home Page
ISE 2.1 comes with default dash boards on the home page. Those are:
All of these dashboards cannot be deleted. However, the dashlets presented in these dashboards can be customized. To add a new dashboard, click on the + symbol at the end of the dashboard title. Give it a name and click on Save.
Choose the dashlets to be put on the dashboard from a list of available dashlets.
Note: Customizing the dashlets themselves is not supported at the moment
Tip: It is always a best practice to minimize the number of dashlets in a dashboard and instead use more dashboards as per the requirements. Avoid repetitive use of the dashlets in different dashboards to reduce the time to fetch the data.
The Metrics section shown in the summary is a system default dashlet and it cannot be removed and cannot be added to any other dashboards.
There a few settings provided for these dashboards. Settings can be viewed as a dropdown by clicking on the gear icon in the top right corner.
The available settings are :
Add New Dashboard - Another way to add a new dashboard.
Add Dashlet(s) - Option to add multiple dahlets to the current dashboard.
Export - Exports the data and the charts in the dashlets of the current dashboard to a PDF file.
Layout template - Option to change the layout of the current dashboard.
Manage Dashboards - Provides the options to mark the current dashboard as the default dashboard to be shown when home page is accessed. It also provides an option to reset all the dashboards - all the cutomized dashlets/dahsboards are deleted.
Customize Context Visibility
Like the dashboard, Context Visibility also has default dashboards. The Dashboards here show the data of the endpoints for the most common scenarios. Context Visibility has two sections :
Endpoints section has all the information related to all the endpoints on the network segregated into different categories. These categories have a dashboard of their own.They are:
In every dashboard, there are two sections, one is dedicated to dashlets and the other is for displaying the data in tabular grid. While the dashlets give a quick view of the data, the data section gives detailed information about the endpoints.
The dashlets in the Context Visibility has a cascade filter support applicable to the charts and the tables below as well. For example, in every dashlet there are charts for different attributes. Different sections of the charts are coloured differently and give information about those attributes. When the administrator clicks on any one of those sections of the chart, all the charts and the data grid in the tables align to that filter and update accordingly. Here is an example which shows the cascading filter effect:

When you click on profiled, the filter profiled is applied to all the other charts in the dashboard and the grid below it as shown here:
The dashboards in the Endpoints section alone can be customized. To configure a new dashboard, navigate to Context Visibility > Endpoints. Click on the gear icon at the end of the dashboard titles row and then select Create New.
A pop-up is shown with three fields. They are Name, Attribute Categories and Columns. In the Name field, a name has be to be given to the new dashboard. In the Attribute Categories field, there are pre-defined categories of the attributes from which the required attributes can be selected to be shown in the dashboard. In the Columns field, the attributes can be selected from the list of attributes available based on the category.
The newly created dashboard shows the data in a tabular format.
Note: None of the dashlets present in the Context Visibility section can be deleted or added to a dashboard.
If any of the dashboards either in the home page or the Context Visibility do not show any information, please make sure that the Primary Monitoring node is up and running and is in sync with the Primary Admin node. If the issue still persists, contact Cisco TAC for assistance.
