Issue

While looking for the ISO files required for installing Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) on a Hyper-V environment, the files available on the Cisco Software Downloads page appear to be the upgrade files for hardware appliance, not the required Hyper-V installation files.

Environment

  • Cisco Identity Services Engine (ISE) version 3.4

  • Microsoft Hyper-V virtualization platform

  • Single-node ISE deployment configuration

Resolution

The OVA and ISO files for Cisco ISE Hyper-V installations are available through the Cisco Software Download Center. Follow these steps to find and locate the appropriate installation files:

Download Process

To download the appropriate ISO files:

1. Access the Cisco Software Download Center and locate the Identity Services Engine Software Downloads page.

2. In the left navigation menu, select All Releases and then select the version of the file you need (for example, 3 > 3.4.0)

3. Locate the files named - ise-3.4.0.608*.SPA.x86_64.iso

These files are specifically designated for virtual machine installations, and are not the upgrade files for hardware appliances

Recommended VM Specifications for Hyper-V

For Microsoft Hyper-V deployments, the following VM specifications are recommended:

  • Disk: 600 GB minimum for a standalone production node

  • NICs: 1 required, 2 or more recommended, up to 6 supported

  • Disk layout: use a single virtual disk

  • Hyper-V generation: Generation 1

  • For a single-node deployment, the smallest documented production profile is:
    - 16 vCPU
    - 32 GB RAM
    - 600 GB single virtual disk
    - 1 vNIC minimum

  • CPU and memory
    Hyper-V sizing by the appliance class being matched:
    - Small / SNS 3615 class: 16 vCPU, 32 GB RAM
    - Small / SNS 3715 class: 24 vCPU, 32 GB RAM
    - Small / SNS 3815 class: 32 vCPU, 64 GB RAM

Cause

The Cisco download portal contains both hardware appliance upgrade files and virtual machine installation files. In order to access the ISO files, download the base file without the patch version from the Cisco Software Download center product page for ISE.
