This section explains how the ONS-QSFP-PSM2 pluggable provides optical channel protection on supported NCS 1014 line cards and maintains service by selecting a working or protected path.
An ONS-QSFP-PSM2 pluggable is a QSFP-DD optical protection switching module that
-
splits the transmit signal from the common port across the working and protected paths;
-
monitors the working and protected receive paths independently and selects a signal based on optical-power thresholds; and
-
helps maintain service when a path degrades or fails.
The pluggable supports wide-band switching based on total optical power and frequency-selective switching based on the power of a channel at a configured baud rate.

ONS-QSFP-PSM2 channel protection switching support |
Cisco IOS XR Release 26.3.1 |
NCS 1014 supports the ONS-QSFP-PSM2 pluggable module to enable channel protection. The NCS1K4-QXP-K9, NCS1K14-2.4T-K9, and NCS1K14-2.4T-X-K9 line cards are the host cards and support ONS-QSFP-PSM2 in both wide-band (all-channel) and frequency-selective (single-channel) protection modes within WDM optical systems. This support enhances network resilience by providing automated, seamless traffic recovery during signal degradation or failure. |
Optical Transport Section controllers
When a physical port is configured in protection switching module (PSM) mode, three Optical Transport Section (OTS) controllers are created. These controllers represent the Common (COM), Working (W), and Protection (P) ports of the pluggable.

OTS controller |
Logical port |
Function |
|---|---|---|
|
OTS R/S/I/P/0 |
Common |
Controls PSM settings and connects to the protected optical channel. |
|
OTS R/S/I/P/1 |
Working |
Carries traffic on the preferred path and provides optical-power measurements. |
|
OTS R/S/I/P/2 |
Protected |
Carries traffic on the alternate path and provides optical-power measurements. |
A single physical-port LED represents the common, working, and protected logical ports. It turns Red when any logical port has an active alarm and Green when none has an active alarm.
Protection behavior
PSM Module enables dynamic switching between working and protection paths through integrated 1x2 switches in the RX section, and signal bridging to both working and protection ports in the TX section. The auto switching is based on the detected RX-LOS-P alarm, and user can select working or protect path manually using manual switch command.
-
In non-revertive operation, traffic remains on the protected path after the working path recovers.
-
In revertive operation, traffic returns to the working path after the configured wait-to-restore interval.
-
In bidirectional operation, both ends coordinate their switching state. Unidirectional operation switches each direction independently.
