High Power Support for 4.9G Band

Want to summarize with AI?

Enables higher power transmission in the 4.9 GHz US -B domain frequency range of 4920-4980 MHz, with support for modulation schemes up to 802.11ac rates.

The High Power Support for 4.9G Band feature enables higher power transmission in the 4.9 GHz band. It supports the US -B domain frequency range of 4920–4980 MHz. This feature allows modulation schemes up to 802.11ac rates.

This feature adds a user-selectable high-power mode for supported radios after the appropriate high-power license is installed.

Cisco Catalyst IW9165 and IW9167 Series access points support high-power mode on both Radio 1 and Radio 2 interfaces. The feature is available across all radio modes.

Additional reference information

High-power 4.9 GHz mode requires a valid high-power license. When the license is installed, the device makes the high-power configuration available for supported radio slots.

The following are key characteristics:

  • Support for modulation schemes up to IEEE 802.11ac rates

  • Support for 10 MHz and 20 MHz channel widths with 5 MHz channel spacing

  • Fixed antenna gain of -9 dBi when high-power mode is enabled

  • Enabling high-power mode automatically enables high-throughput mode (disabling high-power also disables high-throughput)

  • Ignores user-configured antenna gain settings while high-power is active

Licensing and activation information:

  • Activation requires a high-power license validated through Cisco IOT Operations Dashboard (IOTOD)

  • Without a valid license, high-power configuration commands are unavailable, and the radio operates with standard power limits

  • The 4.9 GHz band is not available by default and must be unlocked via licensing

The supported channel widths for the device remain unchanged.

Note

Ensure that you have the required regulatory authorization before using the 4.9 GHz licensed band.

Regulatory compliance and device compatibility

Supported device models and regulatory domains include:

-B/US, others as license permits

IW9167 Series

Caution

If you attempt to enable high-power mode without a valid license or regulatory approval, the system prevents configuration and defaults to standard TX limits. Always verify licensing and compliance before activation.

Configure High Power 4.9 GHz Mode

Use this task to control whether a radio uses increased power limits.

Before you begin

  • You must install the high-power license before you can configure high-power mode. If the license is not installed, high-power mode cannot be configured.

  • When high power mode is enabled, the system ignores the user-configured antenna gain parameters.

  • Configure the 4.9 GHz frequency band enablement using IW Service Cloud-Managed or offline deployment mode. For more information on how to configure the 4.9 GHz band enablement from IW Service, see the Cisco IoT Operations Dashboard document.

Procedure

  1. Use the configure dot11Radio slot high-power {enable | disable} command to configure high-power mode for the required radio slot.

    Example:

    Device# configure dot11Radio 1 high-power enable

Enabling 4.9GHz high-power mode also enables high-throughput mode.

You can use the disable keyword to disable the 4.9GHz high-power mode. This also disables high-throughput mode.

  2. Use the write command to save the device configuration to memory.

    Example:

    write

Saving the configuration ensures changes persist after a device reload. Unsaved changes are lost after device restart.

  3. Use the reload command to reload the device to apply high-power configuration changes.

    Example:

    reload

Reloading applies the new radio mode configuration. Schedule device downtime when reloading in production environments

  4. Use the show dot11Radio slot config command to verify the radio configuration.

    Example:

    Device# show dot11Radio 1 config
