Learn how to configure your router to send SNMP trap notifications using SNMPv3 for enhanced monitoring and security.

Enable SNMP trap notifications to inform your NMS of important events, using SNMPv3 for enhanced security.

SNMPv3 provides authentication and privacy for trap messages. This task describes how to configure user/groups and enable SNMP trap notifications.

Procedure

1.

Configure a new SNMP group or a table that maps SNMP users to SNMP views.

Example:

Router#configure
Router(config)#router# snmp-server group group_name v3 noauth read view_name1 writer view_name2
2.

Create an SNMPv3 user and assign it to the group.

Example:

Router(config)#snmp-server group group_name v3 noauth read view_name1 writer view_name2
3.

Configure the SNMP trap recipient, version, and security level.

Example:

Router(config)#snmp-server user noauthuser group_name v3
4.

Specify SNMP trap notifications, the version of SNMP to use, the security level of the notifications, and the recipient (host) of the notifications.

Example:

Router(config)#snmp-server host 12.26.25.61 traps version 3
noauth userV3noauth
5.

Enable the sending of trap notifications and specifies the type of trap notifications to be sent.

Example:

Router(config)#snmp-server traps bgp

If a trap is not specified with the notification-type argument, all supported trap notifications are enabled on the router. To display which trap notifications are available on your router, enter the snmp-server traps ? command.
