Explains the distinctions between SNMP objects and object instances, and how they are used in bulk statistics collection.

A SNMP object is a unit of SNMP management information that

  • defines a specific type or class of data for network monitoring and management,

  • is identified through a unique object identifier (OID), and

  • can be referenced in lists for bulk statistics collection.

An object instance is a particular occurrence of a SNMP object that

  • represents an individual data point or SNMP variable,

  • is uniquely identified by an index or OID within a MIB table, and

  • is specified in schemas to collect specific statistics.

Bulk statistics collection requires specifying both SNMP objects (types) and object instances (specific data points). MIBs, MIB tables, MIB objects, and object indices are all referenced by a series of numbers called an object identifier (OID). OIDs are used in configuring both the bulk statistics object lists (for general objects) and bulk statistics schemas (for individual object instances).
