Upgrade NCS 2000 node software after Cisco Optical Site Manager is ready so device packages can be distributed, activated, and verified through managed workflows.

Use this topic to upgrade NCS 2000 node software from 25.x to 26.x after Cisco Optical Site Manager is ready. Use Software Image Management and Upgrade or Cisco Optical Site Manager web UI workflows to distribute, activate, and verify the device software.

NCS 2000 node upgrade workflow

This table helps you choose the workflow for upgrading NCS 2000 device software after Cisco Optical Site Manager is upgraded and operational.

Upgrade scenario

Upgrade approach

Required tasks

NCS 2000 upgrade using SWIMU

Distribute the NCS 2000 software package to the target group and activate the package from Cisco Optical Network Controller.

Create an NCS 2000 image distribution job in SWIMU.

Create NCS 2000 image activation jobs in SWIMU.

NCS 2000 upgrade using the Cisco Optical Site Manager web UI

Download and activate the NCS 2000 software package directly from Cisco Optical Site Manager.

Download the device software package to NCS 2000 devices from the Cisco Optical Site Manager.

Activate NCS 2000 software in Cisco Optical Site Manager web UI.

Create an NCS 2000 image distribution job in SWIMU

Distribute the NCS 2000 software package from Cisco Optical Site Manager to the target NCS 2000 node group before activation.

Before you begin

  • Verify that the Cisco Optical Site Manager 2000 26.x ISO image is available on the Cisco Optical Site Manager instance.

  • Verify that the Cisco Optical Site Manager 2000 .iso contains the NCS 2000 software package.

Follow these steps to create an NCS 2000 image distribution job in SWIMU.

Procedure

  1. In Cisco Optical Network Controller, open the SWIMU application.

  2. Open Upgrade Orchestrator.

  3. Choose Node Software Upgrade > Image Distribution Jobs.

  4. Click Distribute Image.

  5. Select the target Group (only group is possible, single Cisco Optical Site Manager instance can't be selected).

  6. Confirm and start the job.

For image distribution group and job details, see Orchestrate software upgrades.

Job start and ends with COMPLETED

Create NCS 2000 image activation jobs in SWIMU

Activate the previously distributed *.pkg software image on the target NCS 2000 Device.
Note

Activation can temporarily impact system manageability and services. The activation process can be executed for a single node or at group level.

Before you begin

  • The software image is distributed to all target nodes.

  • No critical alarms are present on Cisco Optical Site Manager instances.

  • Target nodes are operationally stable.

  • A maintenance window is defined, if required.

Follow these steps to create NCS 2000 image activation jobs in SWIMU.

Procedure

  1. In Cisco Optical Network Controller, open the SWIMU application.

  2. Choose Upgrade Orchestrator > Software Activation Jobs.

  3. Click Create Activation Job (or equivalent action).

  4. Select the target NCS 2000 Device (recommended to activate one by one).

For software activation group and job details, see Orchestrate software upgrades.

  5. Select the previously distributed software image.

  6. Configure job scheduling:

  7. Run immediately.

  8. Schedule for a maintenance window.

The software activation process is successfully initiated on target NCS 2000 device.

What to do next

  • Monitor the activation job continuously until completion.

  • Resolve the issue and rerun the job if activation fails.

Download the device software package to NCS 2000 devices from the Cisco Optical Site Manager

Transfer the software package from the Cisco Optical Site Manager Software Manager repository to the target NCS 2000 devices.

Before you begin

  • The Cisco Optical Site Manager software package (*.iso) is downloaded to Cisco Optical Site Manager.

  • The Cisco Optical Site Manager instance and devices are reachable.

  • Devices are in the sync-completed state.

  • No critical alarms are present.

Follow these steps to download the device software package to NCS 2000 devices from Cisco Optical Site Manager.

Procedure

  1. Open https://<COSM_IP> in a browser to access the Cisco Optical Site Manager web UI.

  2. Choose Software Manager > Device Software.

  3. Identify the target NCS 2000 devices in the device list.

  4. Select one or more target devices.

  5. Click Download.

  6. Select the desired software package from the list.

For the supporting workflow, see: Download software package on device.

  7. Confirm the operation.

  8. Monitor the download progress in the Status column until the package reaches 100 percent.

The software package is successfully transferred to the selected NCS 2000 devices.

Download completed means that software is transferred to NCS 2000, but USBSYNC is still outstanding

Note

Download progress is displayed for each device. Download time depends on image size and network conditions.
