CiscoWorks Common Services Overview

CiscoWorks Common Services is a suite of technologies that you can add to the CiscoWorks2000 Server. With these technologies you can run specialized client applications from the same desktop environment as you run the CiscoWorks applications. CiscoWorks Common Services can also be run as a standalone server. When you install CiscoWorks Common Services as a standalone server, however, you cannot use CiscoWorks Common Services to run CiscoWorks applications.

Additionally, CiscoWorks Common Services provides management of user roles and privileges, allowing you to control who gets access to the applications and even specific features within the applications. The roles and privileges are controlled by built-in authentication and authorization services. You can also use an external authentication server to set up and enforce customized roles and privileges.

Finally, CiscoWorks Common Services provides data storage and management for the client applications.

You can log in to CiscoWorks Common Services from the server or from a client system. In both cases, you access CiscoWorks Common Services through the web browser.

About User Roles and Privileges

In CiscoWorks Common Services, each user is assigned a role. A role is nothing more than a set of privileges. Privileges define the applications, features, and actions that a CiscoWorks Common Services user can access and use. If a user does not have privileges for a specific item in CiscoWorks Common Services or a client application, the user either will not be able to run the feature or will not be able to see the option in the interface.

Table 1-1 shows the CiscoWorks Common Services applications and utilities, and the roles that contain the privileges to see and use them.
