Interface counters report

The Interface Counters report is a functionality you can use on interfaces that

  • provides statistics for all configured interfaces

  • displays interface status and packet counts, and

  • calculates traffic rates over a configurable load interval.

The report displays these statistics:

  • interfaces configured

  • the input and output rate

  • the total number of packets transmitted and received

  • the time interval

  • the current status of each interface

  • the packet counts for input and output broadcast, multicast, and errored packets

The show interfaces command provides detailed statistics based on the following configurations:

  • The command displays the input and output rate for each interface.

  • The traffic rate displays the average number of packets received per second over the load interval. The load interval is configurable on the physical and bundle main interface.

  • The report displays the load on the interface for a longer duration of time and does not show a spike in the traffic rate. This rate is the exponentially weighted average with a time constant of the load interval.

For more information about the use of the show interfaces command, see Interface and Hardware Component Command Reference for Cisco 8000 Series Routers.

Note

For the average to be within two percent of the instantaneous rate of a uniform stream of traffic, four times the load interval must pass.

Instant display of traffic rates for physical interfaces

The show interfaces counters rates physical command is a diagnostic tool that

  • provides a snapshot of physical interface statistics

  • presents data in a tabular format for analysis, and

  • displays real-time link utilization.

Feature description

Instant display of traffic rates on all physical interfaces

Release 7.5.4

You can now display a snapshot of the traffic throughput and traffic rate on all physical interfaces over the last few seconds. We have introduced a show command to view the counters and rate information for the interfaces.

The feature introduces these:

The router provides real-time statistics through the following process:

  • The command displays input and output rates in Mbps and Kpps.

  • The router calculates statistics over a 5-second interval.

  • The router adjusts the time interval during high processing loads, such as routing updates.

View the statistics

Use the show interfaces counters rates physical command to view statistics of all physical interfaces.

Router#show interfaces counters rates physical

Note

The traffic rate displayed is the real-time link utilization of the time interval. The time interval is determined by the system and may vary based on the system processing load. The time interval increases during events where the system is handling, for example, performing routing updates.

Guidelines and restrictions for the display of traffic rates for bundle interfaces

These configuration guidelines and restrictions apply for the display of traffic rates for bundle interfaces:

  • The displayed traffic rate represents the real-time link utilization for a given time interval. This interval is system-determined and may vary depending on the system processing load. During events such as routing updates, the time interval may increase.

  • The bundle main interface displays Ethernet Layer 2 counters that are derived from bundle MIB statistics. Bundle subinterfaces display Layer 3 protocol statistics. On bundle subinterfaces, byte counts exclude Ethernet overhead, CRC, and VLAN encapsulation bytes. As a result, the input and output bits-per-second values on the bundle main interface can differ from the values on its subinterfaces.

Frequency Synchronization and SyncE

Cisco IOS XR Software supports SyncE-capable Ethernet on the router. The Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) is a network synchronization technology that

  • distributes precision clock signals across network infrastructures

  • injects highly accurate timing signals from external sources into routers, and

  • enables peer routers to recover and transfer frequency signals through physical interfaces.

Cisco IOS XR software provides several capabilities for managing SyncE:

  • The system utilizes external timing technologies such as Cesium atomic clocks or GPS to maintain accuracy.

  • The software passes timing signals to the physical interfaces of the router.

  • Peer routers recover the precision frequency from the line to transfer it throughout the network.

  • The feature supports Ethernet-based synchronization on Cisco 8000 Series Routers.

This feature is traditionally applicable to SONET or SDH networks, but is now available on Ethernet for Cisco 8000 Series Routers with SyncE capability. For more information, see Cisco 8000 Series Router System Management Configuration Guide.
