CiscoWorks Common Services Overview

CiscoWorks Common Services is a server environment that provides a common set of services and management functions to a suite of client applications. These services and functions include the following:

  • Data storage and management

  • A web infrastructure

  • Session management

  • User authentication/permission management

  • Common environment for multiple client applications

You must install CiscoWorks Common Services on your server before you can install any CiscoWorks Common Services client applications. The client applications integrate with CiscoWorks Common Services and use the services and management functions provided by CiscoWorks Common Services.

Additionally, you can install CiscoWorks Common Services on an existing CiscoWorks installation. By installing CiscoWorks Common Services on CiscoWorks, you can access both CiscoWorks and CiscoWorks Common Services applications from a single, common, web-based desktop.

Table 1-1 provides the requirements that your system must meet before you can install and run CiscoWorks Common Services.

  • Color monitor and video card capable of 16-bit color

Pentium III, 1 GHz, minimum

Operating System

One of the following versions of Windows:

  • Windows 2000 Server, Service Pack 2

  • Windows 2000 Professional, Service Pack 2

Note   CiscoWorks Common Services has not been tested with any other Windows or Windows 2000 operating system or service pack; therefore, installing CiscoWorks Common Services on any other operating system is not supported.

1 GB, minimum

Virtual Memory

2 GB, minimum

Hard Drive Space

9 GB of free hard drive space, minimum

Note   The actual amount of hard drive space required depends upon the number of CiscoWorks Common Services client applications you are installing and the number of devices you are managing with the client applications.



Additionally, you should not install CiscoWorks Common Services on a Windows server that is running any of the following services:

  • Primary domain controller

  • Backup domain controller

  • Terminal server

Licensing Information

CiscoWorks Common Services uses the license for the client application or bundle that CiscoWorks Common Services ships with. Types of licenses you may receive with your bundle or application include:

The CiscoWorks Common Services CD-ROM contains an evaluation license, called 90day-unlimited-eval.lic, in the root directory of the disk. This license allows you to manage an unlimited number of devices for 90 days. After the evaluation period has expired, you must upgrade the license to run the client applications. For information about obtaining a license for CiscoWorks Common Services, refer to the Registration and Licensing Notes for CiscoWorks Common Services 1.0.
