Module 5: Software Support

Cisco IOS Software Entitlement

Because Cisco IOS Software is a living, constantly evolving software system, post-warranty service contracts that include maintenance and support for this software are essential.

Cisco IOS Software support is a key service component of many Cisco service programs (SMARTnet, SMARTnet Onsite) as well as some Partner Technical Support Services programs. In order for customers to have access to Cisco IOS updates through these programs, they must purchase a service contract for each device and Cisco IOS software license that they have running on their networks.

Under a Cisco service contract, a customer may only download updates for a device that is under a current service agreement. For example, if a customer has two 6500 routers, and only one is covered under a service program like SMARTnet, then only one 6500 router is eligible for Cisco IOS downloaded updates. Additionally, if a customer has a network with multiple products (e.g. 3600’s, 6500’s, 12000’s, etc.) and only has SMARTnet software support for the 3600’s, the customer is only eligible to download updates for the 3600. To obtain Cisco IOS updates or other support services for other non-supported devices, additional service contracts are required.

Note: SMARTnet, SMARTnet Onsite, and Partner Technical Support Service programs are discussed in greater detail in subsequent modules within this course.
