Multicast traffic scheduling on egress queues

Want to summarize with AI?

Describes the multicast traffic scheduling feature, which enables granular control of multicast data by applying egress queuing parameters such as shaping and priority. It explains how scheduling occurs during the second pass of egress processing to ensure efficient handling for different receivers.

Multicast traffic scheduling on egress queues is a QoS traffic queuing feature that

  • schedules multicast traffic in the second pass of egress processing

  • applies egress queuing policy parameters such as shaping, priority, and queuing on multicast traffic, and

  • enables granular control of multicast traffic per egress queue.

Feature Name

Release Information

Feature Description

Multicast Traffic Scheduling on Egress Queues

Release 26.2.1

Introduced in this release on: Fixed Systems (8700 [ASIC: K100]) (select variants only*)

This feature requires egress feature capability on supported platforms. Use the hw-module profile edge-mode CLI command to enable the feature.

The feature introduces these changes:

CLI:

  • hw-module profile edge-mode

  • show hw-module profile edge-mode

*This feature is now supported on:

  • 8711-48Z-M

  • 8712-MOD-M

Multicast Traffic Scheduling on Egress Queues

Release 24.3.1

Introduced in this release on: Modular Systems (8800 [LC ASIC:ASIC: P100])(select variants only*)

We have introduced multicast traffic scheduling on egress queues. Now you can have more granular control over multicast traffic by applying egress queuing policy map parameters such as traffic shaping, priority, and queuing, to each egress queue. This allows for specific management of multicast traffic for different receivers, ensuring efficient and prioritized handling of multicast data.

*This feature is enabled by default and supported on:

  • 88-LC1-12TH24FH-E

  • 88-LC1-52Y8H-EM

Limitations of multicast traffic scheduling on egress queues

Egress QoS policy-map statistics for multicast traffic

Multicast traffic is not reflected in egress QoS policy-map statistics.

This limitation applies when you use the show policy-map interface command to verify egress QoS policy behavior for interfaces that carry multicast traffic.

Egress queueing statistics primarily account for unicast traffic. Multicast traffic follows a different forwarding path in the system and is not included in policy-map counters such as matched, transmitted, and dropped packets.

The absence of multicast statistics in the show policy-map interface output does not indicate traffic loss or incorrect QoS policy behavior.
