Questo documento descrive il flusso di chiamata di un gateway H.320 di base per una videochiamata al gatekeeper H.323. H.320 è una raccomandazione ITU-T per le chiamate dati, voce e video multimediali su reti ISDN.
H.320 è costituito dai seguenti protocolli:
H.221 - Definisce la struttura del frame per i servizi di teleservice audiovisivi su 1 o più canali B ISDN.
H.230 - Definisce i segnali di controllo e di informazione utilizzati in un sistema audiovisivo.
H.242 - Definisce le procedure di segnalazione, come l'inizializzazione della modalità, lo scambio di funzionalità e la commutazione della modalità necessarie per stabilire una chiamata multimediale.
Ogni videochiamata H.320 consiste di una chiamata primaria e zero o più chiamate secondarie. Ad esempio, una videochiamata a 128K consiste di una chiamata primaria e di una secondaria.

La videochiamata descritta in questo documento utilizza una larghezza di banda di 384 K.

In questa sezione viene descritto il flusso di chiamate risultante da questo esempio di configurazione.
Una chiamata ISDN dalla PSTN arriva al gateway H.320 con 919-991-5600 come numero chiamato, la capacità di supporto (bearer cap) è impostata su Unrestricted Digital su B-channel=1.
Il gateway H.320 esegue la ricerca dial-peer in ingresso. Poiché il cappuccio al portatore è impostato su Digitale senza restrizioni, cerca prima il dial peer H.320 POTS (peer di composizione configurati con tipo di informazioni impostato su video) e corrisponde al dial peer 9190. La prima chiamata è chiamata Chiamata primaria.
Il gateway H.320 esegue la ricerca dial-peer in uscita e instrada la chiamata attraverso il dial-peer 9910.
Il gateway H.320 invia una richiesta di ammissione (ARQ) al gatekeeper e riceve un messaggio di conferma dell'ammissione (ACF).
Il gateway H.320 invia un messaggio H.225 SETUP a Polycom.
Il gateway H.320 riceve un messaggio H.225 CONNECT da Polycom e la videochiamata viene connessa sul segmento IP.

La sincronizzazione dei frame H.221 viene stabilita tramite il canale B = 1 (noto anche come canale iniziale o chiamata primaria).
Una volta stabilita la sincronizzazione dei frame, Polycom avvia 5 chiamate secondarie una dopo l'altra. La sincronizzazione dei frame viene stabilita tra i canali B da 2 a 6 (noti anche come canali aggiuntivi o chiamate secondarie).
Il gateway H.320 associa le chiamate secondarie in arrivo dell'intervallo da 919-991-5601 a 919-991-5605 alla chiamata primaria (passaggio 2) con il comando voice-class call-number inbound 1, definito come mostrato nella configurazione.
Il gateway H.320 e la linea Polycom si scambiano funzionalità audio e video e open logical channel (OLC) per streaming audio e video attraverso i terminali IP e POTS.
Prima di inserire il traffico video su una rete, assicurarsi che esista una larghezza di banda adeguata per tutte le applicazioni necessarie. Calcolare innanzitutto i requisiti minimi di larghezza di banda per ogni applicazione principale, ad esempio voce, video e dati. La somma rappresenta il requisito minimo di larghezza di banda per ogni collegamento specifico. Questa quantità non dovrebbe consumare più del 75% della larghezza di banda totale disponibile su quel collegamento. Questa regola del 75% presume che una certa larghezza di banda sia necessaria per il traffico di sovraccarico. Esempi di sovraccarico di traffico includono aggiornamenti del protocollo di routing e pacchetti keepalive di layer 2, nonché applicazioni aggiuntive, ad esempio la posta elettronica e il traffico HTTP. Il traffico voce e video non occupa più del 33% della capacità del collegamento
Video H.323
In base allo standard H.323, le capacità video nei terminali H.323 sono opzionali. Tuttavia, quando si implementano i terminali H.323, questi devono supportare il codec H.261, con supporto opzionale per lo standard H.263.
H.261—Codec video per servizi audiovisivi a multipli di 64 kbps. I dispositivi conformi allo standard H.261 codificano completamente i frame iniziali. I dispositivi codificano quindi solo le differenze tra il frame iniziale e quello successivo per la trasmissione di pacchetti minima. La compensazione opzionale del movimento migliora la qualità delle immagini.
H.263—Codec video per POTS (Video Plain Old Telephone Service). Lo standard H.263 è un aggiornamento compatibile con lo standard H.261. H.263 migliora in modo significativo la qualità dell'immagine con una tecnica di stima del movimento di mezzo pixel, come è un requisito.
