Guides you through verifying the switch software mode, boot variables, install package state, and rollback timer to assess the current boot and install conditions before retrying an upgrade or confirming the device is in the expected install mode.
Use this procedure to verify the switch software mode, boot variables, install package state, and rollback timer to assess the current boot and install conditions before retrying an upgrade or confirming the device is in the expected install mode.
Stop before retrying if different stack members or supervisors report different unexpected states. Preserve the show install log and the complete original session.
Procedure
-
Identify the current switch software mode.
Example:
switch# show version | begin Switch Ports
Switch Ports Model SW Version SW Image Mode
------ ----- ------------ ----------- -------------- -------
* 1 48 C9300-48P 17.xx.x CAT9K_IOSXE INSTALL
INSTALL value for the Mode means that the device boots expanded packages through packages.conf. BUNDLE means it boots a .bin file.
-
Verify boot variables and automatic boot state.
Example:
switch# show boot
Current Boot Variables:
BOOT variable = flash:packages.conf;
Boot Variables on next reload:
BOOT variable = flash:packages.conf;
Manual Boot = no
A normal INSTALL-mode system points both current and next-reload boot variables to packages.conf and has automatic boot enabled.
-
Verify install package state and rollback timer.
Example:
switch# show install summary
State (St): I - Inactive, U - Activated & Uncommitted,
C - Activated & Committed, D - Deactivated & Uncommitted
----------------------------------------------------------------
Type St Filename/Version
----------------------------------------------------------------
IMG C <CURRENT_RELEASE>
----------------------------------------------------------------
Auto abort timer: inactive
----------------------------------------------------------------
-
C indicates that the image is active and persistent.
-
I indicates that the image is added but inactive.
-
U indicates that the installation process is running but not committed.
-
D indicates that the image is deactivated but the change is not committed.
An inactive timer is expected when no staged install or rollback decision is pending.
