Early versions of the PA-A3-xxx cards used hardware revision 1.0 of the Segmentation and Reassembly (SAR) component. The 1.0 SAR component has ATM performance limitations which, under high traffic conditions, may result in dropped packets and reports of cyclic redundancy check (CRC) errors.
Routers with high utilization will exhibit incrementing "rx_no_buffer" counts when the show controller command is issued.
A limited quantity of PA-A3-xxx cards were produced prior to the implementation of hardware revision 2.0 of the SAR component. The 2.0 SAR component resolves the performance limitations of the 1.0 SAR component.
The sample output below shows the drops when the PA-A3 card with a 1.0 SAR component reaches the performance limitations. The drops are counted as "rx_cell_throttle" in the output of the show controller command on the VIP console. This output was taken using Cisco IOS® Software release 12.0(6)S.

Whenever the specific ATM performance limitations are seen on early PA-A3-xxx cards with the 1.0 SAR component, replace the card with a PA-A3-xxx that uses the 2.0 SAR component by requesting a return materials authorization (RMA) from the Technical Assistance Cetner.
