Announcing Cisco Secure User Registration Tool,
Software Version 2.5
Cisco Systems announces the availability of Cisco Secure User Registration Tool (URT) Version 2.5. URT is a virtual LAN (VLAN) assignment service that provides organizations with increased LAN security by actively identifying and authenticating users as they access the network. URT associates users to the specific network resources they are authorized to use by dynamically assigning them to their appropriate VLAN, independent of their network port connection. URT also intelligently monitors and manages user identification, locations, and network access times and allows users to move throughout the campus and securely access their resources and services from any available LAN port. LAN user traffic is partitioned through VLAN port assignments based on a user's identity. With URT, RJ-45 wall jacks are no longer penetration threats to corporate networks.
Key features of URT v2.5 include the following:
- Web-based logon from Windows, Macintosh, and Linux clients
- RADIUS authentication and accounting support
- Secure link between the URT client and the VLAN Policy Server (VPS)
- Support for Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) AD and NDS directories
- Media Access Control (MAC) security option for unauthorized access
- Multiple users per port based on logged-on user IDs
- MAC address events history
- Display of Windows NT Groups
- Enhancements to the URT Administrator Server graphical user interface (GUI)
Cisco Secure URT v2.5.3 ships on new VLAN Policy Server (Cisco 1102 URT) and adds support for new Catalyst devices Please refer to URT 2.5.3 Release notes for more information
Availability
Cisco Secure URT Version 2.5.3 will begin shipping on February 10th,2004. New customers interested in purchasing URT v2.5.3 can order this product through normal sales channels (see below for ordering information) beginning January 22, 2004. Some components in URT v2.5 include strong encryption technologies, which are restricted for some types of U.S. export.

Starting with the URT 2.5.3 release, Cisco is introducing the Cisco 1102 VPS appliance, which replaces the Cisco 1101 VPS appliance, formerly used in URT 2.5.1 and URT 2.5.2 releases. The URT v2.5.3 software is compatible with both Cisco 1101 and Cisco 1102 appliance (but not with Cisco 1100 appliance). Refer to URT v2.5 Q&A for more information. Cisco will continue to support customers with Cisco 1100 VPS and Cisco 1101 appliances through its SMARTnet program during its normal service life cycle.
With the announcement of URT v2.5, the following part numbers will no longer be orderable from Cisco as of January 22,2004:
