Q1. What are Product Analytics?

A1. Cisco is dedicated to continuously enhancing its products and services. Understanding how you use Cisco’s solutions is essential to achieve this objective. To support this effort, Cisco collects device, licensing, and system information to improve products, enhance customer experiences, conduct analytics, and drive adoption. Data processing is conducted in accordance with the Cisco End User License Agreement, the Cisco Privacy Statement, and any other applicable agreements with Cisco. 

Starting form Cisco release 17.18.1, the product analytics functionality is enabled on Cisco Industrial Ethernet Switches and Industrial Routers.

Q2. How does this help customers?

A2. Product Analytics data helps Cisco serve its customers more effectively. For example, on which new platforms are introduced, the lifecycle management of Cisco products, and the default enablement of features to simplify customer deployments. 

Q3. What information is collected by Product Analytics?

A3. Product Analytics collects only System Information and does not gather any Personal Identifiable Information (PII), such as MAC or IP addresses, usernames, custom configuration names, or user-provided strings. For more information, see here. 

The Product Analytics Feature Description Sheet explains how Product Analytics processes system information. It provides details on feature enablement and product usage data as system-level information, presented through aggregated data, flags, and categorical breakdowns. All collected and transmitted reports, such as deployment models and network services, are accessible directly on the device. Additionally, all data reported to Cisco is auditable on the device, including the reporting period and the content of the attributes being shared. Q4. How is the information collected and sent?

A4.

·       Feature usage data is collected on the device and summarized as statistics. 

·       If Product Analytics is not explicitly configured in the startup configuration, it uses the various topologies to send the Product Analytics data in the RUM Report via directly connected and non-direct (air-gapped) to Cisco Smart Software Manager (CSSM) automatically 7 days after the device boots. 

·       On IE and IR platforms, once Product Analytics is enabled, a report is generated every 30 days, and anonymized metrics are sent in encrypted format to the Cisco cloud. 

·       The level of detail in the collected data may vary based on the device's connection method. 

·       The payload of data remains the same regardless of the connection method. 

·       Two connection methods are used for sending data from the device: 

o   Direct: CSSM 

o   Indirect: CSLU or ONPREM-CSLU 

·       Account names and metadata may vary depending on the Product Analytics telemetry report, but the content collected from the device remains consistent. 

 

Q5: Does Product Analytics require any license?

A5. No license is required for Product Analytics.

Q7. Does enabling this functionality impact device functionality?

A7. No, the infrastructure to collect the analytics operates independently of the device's core functionality and does not cause any degradation of service. 

Q8. How is the data secured in transport & storage?

A8. Data is encrypted and securely transmitted over a mutually authenticated HTTPS connection during transport. It is also encrypted at rest within Cisco's secure infrastructure. Both the transport and storage processes comply with the Customer Master Data Protection Agreement. 

Q9. Where would the product analytics data be sent?

A9. All product analytics data is sent to the URL https://dnaservices.cisco.com/, which is hosted and managed by Amazon AWS. Blocking this URL through a firewall prevents the report from being sent to Cisco. The collected data is stored in the USA. 

Q10. How do I opt-out/turn off Product Analytics?

A10. Starting from releases 17.18.1, Product Analytics is enabled by default if it is not explicitly configured (either enabled or disabled). A 7-day grace period is provided, during which users can choose to disable it. During this grace period, no data is collected or transmitted from the device. 

 

To disable the feature explicitly at any time, use the no form of the product analytics command in configuration mode, as shown in this example:

Q11. What happens to the telemetry reports, and how are they handled on the device? 

A11.  Report generation occurs on the device only when the reporting interval is met (e.g., every 30 days for switching). Once the telemetry report is generated and sent to Cisco Smart Software Manager (CSSM), it is deleted from the device, and no data is retained locally. During the grace period, the show commands for Product Analytics display the status as "Not responding" or "Unavailable."

A12. Starting from 17.18.X, these IIoT switching and IIoT routingI platforms support Product Analytics.

Q14: What are your decision points while configuring/deploying/using this feature?

A14.

·       A14. If product-analytics or no product-analytics is present in the startup configuration, Product Analytics is enabled or disabled for the device as specified. 

 

·       If the startup configuration does not include Product Analytics settings, a 7-day grace period begins. During this time, syslogs notify that Product Analytics be enabled in 7 days. After the grace period, Product Analytics is automatically enabled and appears in the "show running-config" output. 

 

·       Users can enable or disable Product Analytics at any time. Configuring Product Analytics during the 7-day grace period immediately stops the 7-day timer. 

 

·       Use the product-analytics enable command to enable the feature. Configuring this command immediately terminates the 7-day timer, which is useful for testing. 

 

·       Product Analytics can also be managed through the CSSM user interface for all licensed devices under the Smart Account or Preferences Tab. 

 

·       The reporting interval defined in the policy determines how frequently reports are generated. 

 

·       Product Analytics delivery depends on Smart Licensing settings, and the system selects the appropriate channels (e.g., CSSM) for data transmission. 

 

·       On switching platforms, users can choose between in-memory or on-disk storage to balance memory usage and data requirements. 

 

·       Ensure the device can receive policy updates. (Dynamic policy updates are not available in release 17.18.X.) 

 

·       Verify that communication channels for data and policy updates remain secure. (Dynamic policy updates are not available in release 17.18.X.)

A15. Yes, it is GDPR compliant.  No Personal Identifiable Information (PII) data is collected or sent. All data is encrypted at Rest.
