Configure all system parameters according to the established baseline to prevent unexpected behavior. Always verify settings in a staging environment before applying them to production devices.
Do not configure access switches as root: The root switch for each Spanning Tree instance should be a backbone or distribution switch. Do not configure an access switch as the Spanning Tree primary root.
Consider network topology: Because of traffic patterns, number of forwarding interfaces, or link types, the switch with the lowest MAC address might not be the ideal root switch.
Use diameter and hello keywords appropriately: When you specify the network diameter, the switch automatically sets optimal hello time, forward delay time, and maximum-age time for a network of that diameter, which can significantly reduce the convergence time. You can use the hello keyword to override the automatically calculated hello time.
Priority value limitations: You cannot configure a switch as the root switch if the required value is less than 1.
Extended system ID impact: If your network includes switches both with and without extended system ID support, a switch that supports the extended system ID is unlikely to become the root switch. The extended system ID increases the switch priority value when the VLAN number exceeds the priority value of connected switches running older software.
Root switch placement: Assign a backbone or distribution switch as the root switch for each Spanning Tree instance. Do not make an access switch the Spanning Tree primary root.
