Introduction

This document provides information on how to update the user display name with the Bulk Administration Tool and also offers the steps necessary to troubleshoot issues with this procedure.

Prerequisites

Requirements

Cisco recommends that you have knowledge of these topics:

  • Cisco Unified Communications Manager (CallManager)

  • Bulk Administration Tool (BAT)

The information in this document was created from the devices in a specific lab environment. All of the devices used in this document started with a cleared (default) configuration. If your network is live, make sure that you understand the potential impact of any command.

Update the User Display Name

The best way to update Cisco Unified IP Phones (all models) is with the help of Cisco Unified Communications Manager Bulk Administration. Complete the steps outlined in this section.

Export Phone Records

Complete these steps in order to export phone records from Cisco Unified Communications Manager:

  1. From the Cisco Unified Call Manager Administration main page, choose Bulk Administration > Phones > Export Phones > All Details.

    The Export Phones Configuration window displays.

  2. Choose the All Phone Types option from the Select the Device Type drop-down list.

  3. Enter the export File Name in the File Name text box and Job Description in the Job Information area.

  4. Click the Run Immediately radio button to export phone records.

  5. Click Submit in order to create a job that exports phone records.

  6. Use the Job Scheduler option in the Bulk Administration main menu in order to activate this job.

Download the Exported File

You can search and download the exported file with the Upload/Download Files option from the Bulk Administration menu. Complete these steps in order to download the file:

  1. Choose Bulk Administration > Upload/Download Files.

  2. Click the Find button and find the files you want to download.

  3. Check the check box that corresponds to the files you want to download, and then click Download Selected.

    The File Download pop-up window displays.

  4. Click Save.

  5. In the Save As pop-up window, choose the location you want to save the file to and click Save.

    The Download Complete pop-up window displays.

Edit the .csv File

After you download the .csv files, edit the column that is needed and save it as a .csv file format. Complete these steps in order to accomplish this:

  1. Open the Downloaded phones.csv file with Microsoft Excel.

  2. Open the downloaded phones.csv file with Microsoft Excel.

    You can find columns such as MAC ADDRESS,DESCRIPTION,DIRECTORY NUMBER ,PARTITION ,DISPLAY ,ASCII DISPLAY ,ALERTING NAME ,ALERTING NAME ASCII ,EXTERNAL PHONE NUMBER MASK.

  3. Modify the Alerting Name Ascii and ASCII Display columns with the names that have to be displayed.

  4. Save the phones.csv file and complete the steps in the next section to upload the file.

Upload the .csv File

Complete these steps in order to upload the updated .csv file:

  1. Choose the Upload/Download Files option from the Bulk Administration menu.

  2. Click the Add New button.

  3. In the File text box, enter the full path of the file you want to upload, or click Browse and locate the .csv file you want to upload.

  4. From the Select the Target drop-down list box, choose the target for which you want to use the file.

  5. From the Transaction Type drop-down list box, choose the transaction type the file defines.

  6. If you want to overwrite an existing file with the same name, check the Overwrite File check-box, if it exists.

  7. Click Save.

    The status displays that the upload is successful.

Insert the Phones

Complete these steps in order to insert the phones to the Cisco Unified Communications Manager:

  1. Choose Bulk Administration > Phones > Insert Phones.

  2. From the Insert Phone section, select the Insert Phones All Details radio button. Then select the File Name from the drop-down menu.

  3. Select the Override the existing configuration option, and click Submit.

  4. Use the Job Scheduler option in the Bulk Administration main menu in order to activate this job.

Troubleshoot

Troubleshooting Procedure

If the Alerting Name Ascii and ASCII Display columns are not present in the downloaded .csv file, complete these steps:

  1. Choose Bulk Administration > Upload/Download Files.

  2. Click the Find button and find the files you want to download.

  3. Check the check box that corresponds to the files you want to download, then click Download Selected.

    The File Download pop-up window displays.

  4. Click Save.

  5. In the Save As pop-up window, choose the location you want to save the file to and click Save.

    The Download Complete pop-up window displays.

  6. Open the bat.xlt with Microsoft Excel.

  7. Click the Options button.

    This Security Alert - Macro pop-up window opens:

  8. After you choose the Enable this content option, click OK.

  9. Click the Create File Format button.

    This window opens:

  10. After you select Display, Alerting Name Ascii and ASCII Display in the Selected Line Fields, click Create and click Yes in the pop-up window.

  11. Update the file with the necessary details and save it as a .csv file.

  12. Now you can upload the .csv file and insert phones.
