Introduction
This document outlines the step-by-step procedure for registering devices within a Cisco License On-Prem (CLP) deployment.
Prerequisites
Before you start, ensure that you have the following:
- An active Cisco Smart Account.
- A valid Cisco.com (CCO) User ID and password with access to the relevant Smart or Virtual Account.
- Admin Access to the Cisco License On-Prem (CLP) Portal.
Steps
SL Device Registration to On-Prem:
Step 1: To register a device, create a token within the CLP portal. Refer to the guide:
How can I create a token in Cisco License On-Prem (CLP) deployment?
Step 2: Configure the product instance. As registration methods (CLI or GUI) vary by product, please refer to your specific product documentation for instructions on configuring communication with the Cisco License On-Prem server.
Step 3: Verify network connectivity between the device and the On-Prem server using the “Ping” command (if applicable).
Step 4: Execute the registration command on the device
- CLI: “license smart register idtoken <paste the token generated from step 1 above>”.
- For a GUI-based Product, use the token to register the device by referring to the Product Installation Guide.
Step 5: Verify the registration status using the command “show license all” (If applicable)
Step Result: In the Registration column, you can see the status of registration as “Registered”.
Registering Smart Licensing Using Policy (SLP) / CSLU Devices
Step 1: Configure the product instance. Consult your specific product documentation for instructions on configuring communication with the CLP environment.
Retrieving the Transport URL (from Cisco License On-Prem GUI)
Step 2: Access the Cisco License On-Prem (CLP) portal at: https://(IP Address):8443/admin/#/mainview
Step 3: Navigate to the Licensing workspace from the left-hand menu.
Step 4: Navigate to the On-Prem Account tab and select the account where the device will be registered.
Step 5: Navigate to the Devices tab. Under Device Connections, select Configure Device and Token Management.
Step 6: Locate the CSLU Transport URL field and click the Copy button. Save this URL, as it is required for configuring the transport type on your product instance.
Step 7: Configure the transport type and URL on the product instance. Refer to the product's Configuration Guide for details on: Setting the Transport Type, URL, and Reporting Interval. (Refer to the Configuration Guide)
Initial Usage Synchronization
Step 1: Synchronize the product instance with the CLP portal.
- On the product instance CLI, enter license smart sync {all| local} in privileged EXEC mode.
Note: If utility mode is enabled, the RUM report sent to the CLP is flagged accordingly.
Step 2: Verify the status in the CLP UI by navigating to Licensing Tab > Choose On-Prem Account > Devices > Device Inventory. The Usage report status column should display: Usage report from device.
Step 3: Perform a final synchronization to ensure all data is reflected.
Synchronize usage information with On-Prem.
To perform this action, click: How can I perform Cisco License On-Prem (CLP) synchronization with Cisco License Central (CLC)?
Step Results: The product instance and license usage information will now be visible in the CLP portal.
Troubleshooting
Q: What is the frequency at which a device sends usage reports to the On-Prem/CSLU application?
A: By default, the device sends usage reports once every 30 days. However, you can manually trigger a report from the device to the On-Prem/CSLU application at any time by executing the license smart sync all command on the device.
