CSCwb51659 | [ncs560] Umbrella SMU for ncs560 DDR4 8GB support |
Cisco is introducing a new Double Data Rate 4 (DDR4) 8Gb memory component in Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 560 Series Routers. Cisco IOS XR releases 7.6.1 and later are compatible with the component. However, routers that have the new memory components that are running Cisco IOS XR releases earlier than Release 7.6.1 may exhibit performance degradation or multiple reloads.
The current memory component in Cisco NCS 560 Series Routers has reached end of life. A new DDR4 component is being introduced to support the product.
Cisco NCS 560 Series Routers that have the new memory component installed in systems that are running a Cisco IOS XR release earlier than Release 7.6.1 may exhibit ASIC initialization failure in the console, resulting in multiple reloads. Because Cisco IOS XR releases earlier than Release 7.6.1 will not load, the device may stop working.
During unexpected reloads, the following failure signature may be seen:
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:MM DD DDD:MMM:SSS UTC: fia_driver[220]: %FABRIC-FIA_DRVR-3-ASIC_INIT_FAILURE : [6537] : Asic Initialization failed due to:soc reset init failed, device 0 with error 0xffffffff(Internal error)
RP/0/RP0/CPU0:MM DD DDD:MMM:SSS UTC: fia_driver[220]: %FABRIC-FIA_DRVR-3-VM_RELOAD : VM has to be reloaded because of the reason :Board reload due to asic initialization failure
The router hardware version can be determined by following the instructions provided in the How to Identify Affected Products section of this field notice.
For backward compatibility, Cisco highly recommends installing the SMU on the software releases as shown in the following table or upgrading to Cisco IOS XR Release 7.6.1 or later by September 15, 2025. The new hardware version of Cisco NCS 560 Series Routers 3 or later is expected to ship from manufacturing after September 15, 2025.
The new hardware version of Cisco NCS 560 Series Routers is compatible with Cisco IOS XR Release 7.6.1 and later. No action is required for routers that are already deployed with Cisco IOS XR Release 7.6.1 or later.

Cisco does not recommend a Return Material Authorization (RMA) for the issue described in this field notice. The routers will resume normal operation with the solution provided in this section of this field notice.
The new Cisco NCS 560 Router hardware version can be determined by using the show diag details command. The line for Hardware Revision will show an output of 3.0 or later.
The following is an example of the command and its output:
