Electrical Damage Protection Guide
Electrical Damage Protection Guide
Protect your Cisco equipment from electrical damage.
Your Cisco WAN interface card can be damaged by excessive voltages on the interface cabling.
Excessive voltages can be caused by:
•
Power surges
•
Power dropouts
•
Ground loop currents
•
Lightning strikes
•
Nearby AC wiring
The following precautions reduce the possibility of excessive voltages from interface cabling:
•
Use end-to-end shielded cables.
•
Keep cable runs as short as possible.
•
Route cables away from AC wiring.
•
Do not run serial cables between buildings.
•
Install surge suppressors or optical isolators on serial cables. If a surge suppressor has a ground wire, you must connect the ground wire to a good earth ground.
The following precautions also reduce the possibility of electrical damage:
•
Electrical outlets must be properly grounded. This is a requirement.
•
Use an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) to avoid unnecessary shutdowns and restarts.
