Deleting a Probe Connection
After Discovery, the probe connections in your network are known to SGM and added to the SGM database. Physically deleting probe connections from your network is not the same as deleting them from the SGM database. The following sections describe the differences between deleting probe connections from your network and deleting them from the SGM database, and the procedures for doing so:
•
Deleting a Probe Connection from Your Network
•
Deleting a Probe Connection from the SGM Database
Deleting a Probe Connection from Your Network
If you physically delete a known probe connection from your network (for example, by powering down an ITP), it remains in the SGM database, SGM labels it Unknown, and it is the system administrator's responsibility to delete it from the SGM database, if you choose to do so.
Deleting a Probe Connection from the SGM Database
Typically, you delete a probe connection from the SGM database for one of the following reasons:
•
You have physically deleted the probe connection from your network. This is the most common reason for deleting a probe connection from the SGM database.
•
The probe connection is Down, Inactive, or Unknown, you are aware of the reason, and you no longer want to see it in SGM displays. For example, the probe connection might be a test lab device.
If you have physically deleted a known probe connection from your network, and you then delete it from SGM, it is no longer in the SGM database, it does not appear in SGM windows, and it is not discovered when you run Discovery.
If you have not physically deleted a known probe connection from your network, and you delete it from SGM, at the next poll SGM finds the probe connection and adds it back to the SGM database, setting the status appropriately. If this happens, do not delete the probe connection again. Instead, set it to Ignored. See the "Ignoring a Probe Connection" section for more information.

Note
If you delete a probe connection from the SGM database, the probe connection is deleted for all SGM clients and views connected to that SGM server.
To delete a probe connection from the SGM database, use one of the following procedures:
•
Select one or more probe connections in a window, then select Edit > Delete from the SGM Main Menu.
•
Right-click a probe connection in a window, then select Delete in the right-click menu. (You cannot delete more than one probe connection at a time from the right-click menu.)
SGM asks you to confirm the deletion:
•
Select Yes to delete the selected probe connections. SGM deletes the probe connections from the SGM database.
•
Select No to return to the window without deleting any probe connections from the SGM database.
Ignoring a Probe Connection
You can instruct SGM to ignore a probe connection when it aggregates and displays network data. Setting probe connections to Ignored prevents known probe connection problems from affecting SGM displays for associated objects. In effect, you are preventing a known problem from distracting you from other, more urgent network problems.
For example, you can set a probe connection to Ignored before shutting down the probe connection for maintenance.

Note
If you set a probe connection to Ignored, the probe connection is ignored for all SGM clients and views connected to that SGM server.
Also, if you set a probe connection to Ignored, make a note of the change, and do not forget to reset the probe connection when the problem is corrected or the maintenance is complete.
To set a probe connection to Ignored, right-click the probe connection in the Probe Connection Details window, then select Ignore from the right-click menu.
Viewing Ignored Probe Connections
To display all probe connections that are Ignored, display the Probe Connection Window and click the Ignored column header. SGM displays all ignored probe connections at the top of the table.

•
If you installed SGM in a different directory, then the help directory and file are located in that directory.

If the status reason is Unsupported Configuration, correct the configuration and enter the sgm cleandiscover command to delete all current network data and begin a clean discovery of the ITP network. If the status reason is still Unsupported Configuration, enter the sgm clean command to restore the SGM server to a "clean" state, such as would exist after a new installation of SGM. For more information on the use of these commands, see the "SGM Command Reference" section.
Is Ignored
Indicates whether the probe connection is Ignored (that is, whether the probe connection is to be included when aggregating and displaying SGM status information).
Keepalive (msecs)
Keepalive timeout value, in milliseconds.
Keepalive packets are sent between the ITP monitor and the remote server to ensure that the TCP session is active and to detect session failures. During idle periods, the monitor sends keepalive packets to the remote server at intervals specified by the Keepalive value. The monitor expects to receive keepalive packets from the remote server at the same interval. If the monitor does not receive a keepalive packet from the remote server in twice the Keepalive value, the monitor closes the TCP session.
A Keepalive value of 0 means keepalive processing is not enabled.
Maximum Queue Depth
Maximum number of TCP packets that can be queued by the ITP monitor.
If the monitor cannot send a TCP packet immediately, it queues the packet for resending. The Maximum Queue Depth field identifies the maximum number of TCP packets that can be in the queue. If the Maximum Queue Depth value is reached, additional TCP packets are dropped.
Congestion Onset
Number of queued TCP packets that indicates the onset of congestion.
When the queue depth reaches the value specified by the Congestion Onset field, the connection is considered congested. The congestion remains congested until the queue depth drops below the value specified by the Congestion Abate field.
Congestion Abate
Number of queued TCP packets that indicates the end of congestion.
When the queue depth drops below the value specified by the Congestion Abate field, the connection is considered no longer congested.
Receive Window Size (bytes)
Current TCP receive window size for this probe link, in bytes. That is, the number of outstanding (unacknowledged) bytes that the ITP monitor can receive on the TCP connection.
Fast Start
Indicates whether the fast-start option for establishing TCP connectivity is enabled or disabled.
Typically, after the TCP session with the remote server is established, the ITP monitor does not send MSUs from the monitored links to the server until the server responds to the first keepalive. This prevents the ITP from over-running the server until the TCP session and receive window sizes are fully established.
Fast-start overrides this mechanism and allows the ITP to start sending MSUs to the server immediately after the TCP session is established.
Queue Depth
Current number of TCP packets that are queued for resending by the ITP monitor.
Congestion Count
Number of times the probe connection has entered congestion since SGM polling began for the probe connection, or since SGM last reset the averages as a result of bad data.
