To meet FIPS 140-3 compliance requirements and support OpenSSL v3.0, Splunk is updating the MongoDB version used by the KV Store service to version 7.0. MongoDB 7 is a prerequisite for FIPS 140-3 support.
Splunk Enterprise users who cannot upgrade to a version that runs MongoDB version 7.0 should continue to use FIPS 140-2 mode to stay compliant with FIPS.
Check your KV Store version by running the following command in Splunk:
| rest services/kvstore/version
If MongoDB fails to start due to configuration issues related to this upgrade, you might encounter an error message similar to the following in your Splunk logs:
ERROR KVStoreConfigurationProvider [4755 KVStoreConfigurationThread] - Could not start mongo instance. Initialization failed.
Upgrade path to Splunk Enterprise 10.0. This upgrade will facilitate the migration to MongoDB 7.0 and enable FIPS 140-3 compliance.
