Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 540 Large Density Routers with the product ID (PID) of N540-24Q8L2DD-SYS may show a Solid State Drive (SSD) status of NEED UPGD after an upgrade to Cisco IOS XR Software releases 24.4.1 or 24.4.2. The NEED UPGD status can be disregarded because the router can resume normal operation after the mentioned updates. If the SSD FPD is subjected to a force upgrade, the affected router will stop functioning.
N540-24Q8L2DD-SYS routers that exhibit the failure signature that is mentioned in the Problem Description of this field notice have compatibility issues between the SSD manufacturer part and Cisco IOS XR releases 24.4.1 and 24.4.2.
In response to the show hw-module fpd command, impacted N540-24Q8L2DD-SYS routers will reflect an ATR Status of NEED UPGD for FPD devices with names that begin with Ssd, as shown in the following example:

Forcing an upgrade will cause the router to become unrecoverable.
N540-24Q8L2DD-SYS routers that are running Cisco IOS XR Software releases 24.4.1 or 24.4.2 can disregard the SSD status of NEED UPGD because the inaccurate ATR status display does not impact router operation.
As a fix for this issue, Cisco recommends updating N540-24Q8L2DD-SYS routers to Cisco IOS XR Software Release 25.1.1 or later.
The affected SSD can be identified by the CLI command sudo smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sda, as shown in the following example:
sudo smartctl -a -d ata /dev/sda
smartctl 7.4 2023-08-01 r5530 [x86_64-linux-6.6.69-yocto-standard] (local build)
