Problem Description

The Cisco Network Convergence System (NCS) 540 router variant N540X-4Z14G2Q-D will not boot when upgraded to Cisco IOS^® XR Release 7.4.2. The router also can continuously reboot when powered on with the specific Cisco IOS XR image.

Background

The specific Cisco IOS XR image of 7.4.2 has compatibility issues with N540X-4Z14G2Q-D. A process fix was implemented to improve detection of software compatibility with the hardware.

Problem Symptom

The N540X-4Z14G2Q-D router upgraded to Cisco IOS XR Release 7.4.2 boots repeatedly and this output is generated in the console.

Workaround/Solution

The affected router should be downgraded to Cisco IOS XR Release 7.4.1, which will reinstate the router in normal operating mode. Complete these steps:

Power cycle the failed router.
Enter ESC in order to interrupt the boot sequence.
In the boot menu option, choose Boot from iPXE.
Configure the telnet IP address and gateway.
Load the downgrade version of the Cisco IOS XR image.

In order to download Cisco IOS XR 7.4.1, complete these steps:

Open the Software Download page.
Click Browse all.
Choose Routers > Service Provider Edge Routers > Network Convergence System 540 Series Routers > NCS 540X-4Z14G2Q-D Router > IOS XR Software- 7.4.1(ED).
