Problem Description
All ONS 15454 E1000-2 Ethernet boards built prior to September 10, 2001 contain capacitors of an improper value, resulting in a minute Bit Error Rate (BER).
Background
An inadvertent change in capacitor values on the E1000-2 schematic led to the use of an improper component during manufacturing.
Problem Symptoms
These capacitors affect the filter circuitry, resulting in higher than normal BER during operation. While this rate is higher than anticipated, it is very small and will not be an issue for the majority of users.
Workaround/Solution
Cisco reccomends a fix on failure replacement. In most networks this slight increase in the bit error rate will be unnoticeable and/or undetectable. Where the user feels this condition is unacceptable, the E1000-2 Ethernet board should be replaced during normal maintenance periods. A replacement may be obtained by contacting the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) and requesting an RMA replacement.
