Wireless Connectivity for Field Area Networks

Cisco Connected Grid WPAN modules provide IPv6-based, IEEE 802.15.4 g/e-compliant, and highly secure wireless connectivity for the Cisco 1000 Series Connected Grid Routers to enable field area network (FAN) applications such as advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and distribution automation.

Features and Capabilities

The modules are ideal for multi-hop mesh networks and long-reach solutions. They help enable a high ratio of endpoints to field area router. The Connected Grid WPAN modules also provide:

  • Dynamic network discovery and self-healing network capabilities based on IPv6, IEEE 802.15.4 g/e, IETF 6LOWPAN, and IETF RPL
  • 902-928 MHz ISM band Unlicensed Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) technology
  • Robust security functionality, including Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128-bit encryption, IEEE 802.1x, and frequency hopping
