ITSI Upgrade Readiness precheck VMGN_CLN fails with "Missing objects in migration" when the itsi_migration collection contains more than one record

Applicability

Observed on ITSI 4.21.2 on Splunk Enterprise 10.4.1 (standalone search head, RHEL 9), upgrading to ITSI 5.0

Description

Customer is attempting to upgrade ITSI from 4.21.2 to ITSI 5.0, but the Upgrade Readiness Dashboard precheck VMGN_CLN fails with “Missing objects in migration” (no details shown when clicked), blocking the upgrade needed to remediate security-scan vulnerabilities.

Investigation

1 - Confirm the failing precheck and the flagged objects. The ERROR line includes the full list of flagged records after "Find out details here": grep -A40 "validate_itsi_migration_object" /opt/splunk/var/log/splunk/itsi_upgrade_readiness.log | tail -120

2 - List the records in the collection: curl -k -u admin "https://localhost:8089/servicesNS/nobody/SA-ITOA/storage/collections/data/itsi_migration?output_mode=json" | python3 -m json.tool

3 - Identify the current record. It's the one whose itsi_latest_version matches the installed ITSI version: grep version /opt/splunk/etc/apps/itsi/default/app.conf

Any record with an older version is stale.

Resolution

1 - Back up the KV store and save the current records for rollback. Run the backup as the same user that runs splunkd.

/opt/splunk/bin/splunk backup kvstore -pointInTime true<

curl -k -u admin "https://localhost:8089/servicesNS/nobody/SA-ITOA/storage/collections/data/itsi_migration?output_mode=json" > /tmp/itsi_migration_before_delete.json

2 - Delete each stale record by its _key, keeping only the current version record:

curl -k -u admin -X DELETE "https://localhost:8089/servicesNS/nobody/SA-ITOA/storage/collections/data/itsi_migration/<stale_record_key>"

3 - Verify that the GET from Investigation step 2 returns only one record, with both version fields populated.

4 - Re-run the Upgrade Readiness precheck and confirm it passed:
grep "ITSI migration object is valid" /opt/splunk/var/log/splunk/itsi_upgrade_readiness.log | tail -5
The dashboard should now show "Ready to Upgrade."

5 - Proceed with the upgrade. Afterward, review itsi_migration.log to confirm the new version's migration completed successfully.
