Splunk Enterprise Version 8.2.9, Linux version: Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 7.9 (Maipo), unable to configure boot-start.
User ran the command $SPLUNK_HOME/bin/splunk enable boot-start -user <user> to enable splunk to start at boot time, but was not able to find the /etc/init.d/splunk file to edit as instructed in Splunk documents on how to configure enable boot-start.
Splunk Enterprise configures itself to run as a init-managed service, and does not use systemd. But earlier the user was using systemd and wanted to switch to use init.d.
We performed the below-given steps to enable boot-start.
1) Ran the below-given command to enable boot-start using systemd
/opt/splunk/bin/splunk enable boot-start -systemd-managed 1 -user username
2) After running the above command, we received the following error message:
Removed symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/splunk.service. Init script installed at /etc/init.d/splunk. Init script is not configured to run at boot.
3) Ran the below-given command to enable boot-start using for init.d
/opt/splunk/bin/splunk enable boot-start -systemd-managed 0 -user username
4) After running the above command, we received the following error message:
Removed symlink /etc/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/splunk.service. Init script installed at /etc/init.d/splunk. Init script is not configured to run at boot.
5) Identify whether your Splunk Service is getting started after using the below command:
systemctl status splunk.service

./splunk enable boot-start -systemd-managed 0 -user <user name>
3. After running the above command enable boot-start is successfully enabled.
