Problem Description

An incorrect capacitor has been installed on some power filter assemblies in 15454 shelves that were manufactured and shipped between December 2005 and July 2006.
These power filter assemblies are used in the 800-xxxxx-03 and -04 shelves only.
Approximately 40% of the shelves shipped may have incorrect capacitors.

Background

The purpose of the filter assembly was to meet Telcordia (GR-1089) EMI requirements. The Telcordia specifications were later changed in 2006, making the capacitor unnecessary.
The capacitors were removed from the design for (15454-SA-HDBNC 800-27446-04 and higher), (15454-SA-HD 800-23890-05 and higher), (15454-SA-HD-DDR 800-25931-05 and higher) version shelves which started shipping in October 2006, so the currently shipping shelves are not at risk.

A small number of shelves with incorrect capacitors may experience a capacitor failure during the normal life of the shelf.

Customers with version as stated in the Products Affected section of this field notice may contact Cisco for a replacement via the standard RMA process.

Problem Symptoms

If an incorrect capacitor is installed in the power filter assembly, and it has sustained a mechanical stress crack, it can cause arcing, smoke and a traffic outage.
There is no safety issue associated with the failure, although traffic on the system will be impacted.

Workaround/Solution

Shelves may be returned for replacement.

Shelves returned for removal of the capacitors are re-identified with the latest version.

For 15454-SA-HDBNC ( 800-27446-04, 800-27446-05, etc.).
For 15454-SA-HD ( 800-23890-05, 800-23890-06, etc.).
For 15454-SA-HD-DDR ( 800-25931-05, 800-25931-06, etc.).

How To Identify Hardware Levels

Serial numbers do not change when a board is reworked to the latest revision of 800 numbers.

In order to determine the Part Number, Hardware Revision and Serial Number of your 15454-SA-HD, or 15454-SA-HD-DDR, or 15454-SA-HDBNC=:

Open Cisco Transport Controller.
From the Shelf View, select Inventory
From the Inventory tab, locate the 15454-SA-HD, 15454-SA-HD-DDR, or 15454-SA-HDBNC shelf and compare the information from the Inventory tab against the Products Affected section above.

If you use TL1 commands.
1. >ACT-USER::
2. >RTRV-INV::ALL
3. >CANC-USER::
Compare the information from the TL1 inventory command against the products Affected section above.

Any customers that have a custom BIC on the back of the shelf/chassis, must remove the BIC before shipping back to Cisco, and save it for the replacement shelf
