Summary

• A vulnerability in the implementation of the Locator/ID Separation Protocol (LISP) in Cisco IOS XE Software could allow an unauthenticated, remote attacker using an x tunnel router to bypass authentication checks performed when registering an Endpoint Identifier (EID) to a Routing Locator (RLOC) in the map server/map resolver (MS/MR).

  The vulnerability is due to a logic error introduced via a code regression for the affected software. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by sending specific valid map-registration requests, which will be accepted by the MS/MR even if the authentication keys do not match, to the affected software. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to inject invalid mappings of EIDs to RLOCs in the MS/MR of the affected software.

  Cisco has released software updates that address this vulnerability. There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

Affected Products

• Vulnerable Products

  This vulnerability affects Cisco devices that are running a vulnerable release of Cisco IOS XE Software and are configured with LISP acting as an IPv4 or IPv6 map server.

  This vulnerability affects Cisco IOS XE Software release trains 3.9E and Everest 16.4. For more information about which Cisco IOS XE Software releases are vulnerable, see the Fixed Software section of this advisory.

  To determine whether a device is configured as a LISP map server, administrators can use the show running-config | include map-server privileged EXEC command in the CLI. The following example shows the output of the command for a device that is running Cisco IOS XE Software and is configured as a LISP map server:

  MS/MR# show running-config | include map-server

  ipv6 map-server
  MS/MR#

  This vulnerability does not affect devices that are configured with LISP performing as an egress tunnel router, ingress tunnel router, or purely as a map resolver.

  Determining the Cisco IOS XE Software Release

  To determine which Cisco IOS XE Software release is running on a device, administrators can log in to the device, use the show version command in the CLI, and then refer to the system banner that appears. If the device is running Cisco IOS XE Software, the system banner displays Cisco IOS Software, Cisco IOS XE Software, or similar text.

  The following example shows the output of the command for a device that is running Cisco IOS XE Software Release 16.2.1 and has an installed image name of CAT3K_CAA-UNIVERSALK9-M:

  Products Confirmed Not Vulnerable

  No other Cisco products are currently known to be affected by this vulnerability.

  Cisco has confirmed that this vulnerability does not affect Cisco IOS Software, Cisco IOS XR Software, or Cisco NX-OS Software.

• This vulnerability could be exploited over IPv4 or IPv6.

Indicators of Compromise

• Exploitation of this vulnerability will cause unknown IP addresses to appear in the Who Last Registered column of the output of the show lisp site command on the map server against sites that should be performing authentication.

Workarounds

• There are no workarounds that address this vulnerability.

Fixed Software

• Cisco has released free software updates that address the vulnerability described in this advisory. Customers may only install and expect support for software versions and feature sets for which they have purchased a license. By installing, downloading, accessing, or otherwise using such software upgrades, customers agree to follow the terms of the Cisco software license:

  Additionally, customers may only download software for which they have a valid license, procured from Cisco directly, or through a Cisco authorized reseller or partner. In most cases this will be a maintenance upgrade to software that was previously purchased.
