Cisco 1800/2800/3800 8-Port Async/Sync EIA-232 Serial High-Speed WIC

The asynchronous and synchronous high-density WAN interface cards (HWICs) supported on the modular Cisco 1800 Series, Cisco 2800 Series and Cisco 3800 Series Integrated Services Routers offer cost-effective solutions for common networking problems such as WAN aggregation, legacy protocol support, console and terminal server support, and dial access support.

New HWIC Configurations Include:

  • 4-port serial (2800 and 3800 only)
  • 4-port asynchronous/synchronous
  • 8-port asynchronous/synchronous (RS-232 only)
  • 8-port asynchronous
  • 16-port asynchronous (2800 and 3800 only)

Solving Common Network Problems:

  • WAN aggregation - Synchronous ports allow leased line and Frame Relay connections to remote sites. The 4-port serial HWIC can support speeds up to 8 Mbps on each port and are ideal for remote-site aggregation in small networks.
  • Legacy protocol transport - Low-speed synchronous ports can transport legacy protocols such as SDLC, IBM SNA, Bi-sync, and X.25 across a TCP/IP network, which eliminates the need for separate networks for these protocols and generates cost savings from network convergence.
  • Console and terminal server support - Asynchronous ports provide highly flexible connections that allow access to EIA-232 devices across a TCP/IP network, which means the network operator can manage a network of remote devices from a central location.
  • Dial access server support - Asynchronous ports can be used to connect to an external modem bank to provide low-density dial access server solutions. Speeds up to 230.4 kbps provide fast communication with the latest modem speeds and compression technologies. Cisco IOS Software support is provided for SLIP and PPP dial access methods. RADIUS, TACACS+, and local authentication is available for dial users.
