Cisco Systems® announces the end-of-sale and end-of-life dates for the Cisco® Catalyst® 6500 Series security system bundles, which are based on the non-enhanced Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series chassis. The last day to order the affected product is January 1, 2006. Customers with active service contracts will continue to receive support from the Cisco Technical Assistance Center (TAC) until January 1, 2011.
Table 1 describes the end-of-life milestones, definitions, and dates for the affected product. Table 2 lists the product part numbers affected by this announcement.

End-of-Life Announcement Date
The date the document that announces the end of sale and end of life of a product is distributed to the general public.
July 1, 2005
The last date to order the product through Cisco point-of-sale mechanisms. The product is no longer for sale after this date.
January 1, 2006
Last Shipment Date
The last-possible ship date that can be requested of Cisco and/or its contract manufacturers. Actual ship date is dependent on lead time.

End of Software Maintenance Releases Date
The last date that Cisco Engineering may release any final software maintenance releases or bug fixes. After this date, Cisco Engineering will no longer develop, repair, maintain, or test the product software.

The last-possible date a routine failure analysis may be performed to determine the cause of product failure or defect.

PRODUCT MIGRATION OPTIONS
Customers are encouraged to migrate to replacement products that are based on the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series enhanced chassis (Table 2). The enhanced chassis is similar to existing 3-, 6-, and 9-slot chassis with full support for all existing supervisor engines, line cards, switch fabrics, and even software releases. The enhanced chassis is compatible with all existing IOS and CAT OS software versions. Future software releases will be available to enable new features, such as new power supplies.
The new 3-slot chassis (6503-E) offers enhancements to support Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series line cards. The new 6- and 9-slot chassis (6506-E and 6509-E) offer enhancements that increase the overall system power capacity for industry-leading Power over Ethernet (PoE) port-density scalability.
The security system bundles are also based on the Cisco Catalyst Supervisor Engine 720-3B, a new member of the Cisco Supervisor Engine 720 platform with a modular policy feature card 3B (PFC3B) forwarding engine daughter card as a default option. Highlights of this new supervisor engine include support for hardware-based Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and access control list (ACL) hit counters with 256,000 and 128,000 IPv4 and IPv6 route-table scalability.
