Manufacturing Innovations Meet a Colorful Future

Birla Opus Paints built six new factories with one digital backbone, achieving speed, security, and resilience through Cisco-powered connected operations.

Scaling Fast with Secure, Intelligent Operations

Birla Opus Paints entered the market with a ₹10,000 crore investment and a bold vision. Cisco enabled a connected, secure, and agile enterprise from day one.

About Birla Opus Paints

Birla Opus Paints, part of Grasim Industries and the Aditya Birla Group, is India’s newest paint manufacturer. With six plants, an R&D center, and 145+ depots, it delivers products nationwide with a focus on scale and sustainability.

Challenge

Birla Opus set out to be a major player in decorative paints. Building factories, depots, and distribution at speed required more than infrastructure—it needed a secure, digital-first foundation with visibility, quality, and resilience.

  • One ecosystem: Connect six factories, offices, and 145+ depots into a single, unified network.
  • Consistent: Ensure reliable product quality with reduced batch variability across plants.
  • Visibility: Provide centralized IT/OT visibility so managers can oversee operations easily.
  • Compliant: Meet IEC 62443 standards with strong industrial security across every site.
  • Efficient rollout: Scale quickly while keeping CapEx and OpEx under control.

Solution

Cisco delivered a complete IT/OT platform based on CPwE architecture, tightly integrated by ABB Industrial Automation Business. From Meraki-managed depots to Zero Trust and ThousandEyes, Birla Opus built resilience and scale on one secure foundation:

Outcomes

Always-On Manufacturing

99.9% uptime across plants and depots ensures uninterrupted production, secure supply chains, and continuous operations.

Rapid Nationwide Rollout

145+ depots connected faster with automated plug-and-play, streamlining delivery and accelerating time to market.

Consistent Quality

Batch variability reduced through secure, integrated automation, delivering reliable, high-quality paints every time.

Resilient by Design

IEC 62443-compliant Zero Trust security built resilience into every layer of manufacturing and distribution.

From Vision to Scale

Birla Opus Paints began with a bold vision: to enter India’s fast-growing decorative paints market and become a leader from day one. With a ₹10,000 crore (~1.2B USD) initial investment, the company set out to build six advanced factories and more than 145 depots across the country.

But this wasn’t just about building plants and warehouses. Birla Opus wanted to create an enterprise designed for the future—fast, agile, and sustainable. That meant connecting every factory, every depot, and every office into a single ecosystem where people, machines, and data could work seamlessly together.

From the start, Cisco was chosen as the digital backbone. With Cisco, Birla Opus didn’t just build infrastructure, it built a foundation for growth: a secure, intelligent, and scalable network that made it possible to bring an entirely new paint brand to life with speed and confidence.

Intelligent, Connected Operations

Running 6 factories and 145 depots nationwide requires more than traditional IT systems. It demands real-time visibility and absolute resilience.

Birla Opus uses Cisco Industrial Network Director (IND) and Cisco ThousandEyes to keep a constant eye on performance, ensuring every site is monitored, every process is visible, and every decision is backed by data.

Warehouses use Meraki’s branch-in-a-box model, which keeps operations simple, secure, and agile. Across the enterprise, Cisco Secure Analytics delivers NetFlow insights, helping the IT team quickly spot unusual traffic patterns, detect anomalies, and keep networks optimized.

Milliseconds matter, Cisco’s resilient architecture delivers. With <5ms REP convergence, the network maximizes uptime for industrial processes, ensuring that communications between PLCs, robots, and control systems never fail.

The result is a business that runs smoothly day and night - where every connection inspires confidence.

Security Everywhere

For Birla Opus, security isn’t a bolt-on - it’s part of the design. Cisco Firepower, Cisco ISE, and Cisco Cyber Vision protect automation systems on the plant floor, while Cisco Zero Trust ensures every user, device, and workload is verified before it can connect.

Working closely with ABB, Cisco integrated security into industrial automation, aligning operations with IEC 62443 standards. CPwE provided Birla Opus with tested and validated network designs that deliver the scale, reliability, security, and future-readiness needed to make every deployment easier and risk-free.This means that safety and compliance aren’t afterthoughts, they are built into every switch, every sensor, every process.

Cisco ThousandEyes adds another layer of resilience by giving the team visibility into external networks, allowing them to anticipate and address potential disruptions before they reach the factory floor.

Together, these solutions create a shield around Birla Opus’ entire operation so production is protected, data is secure, and the company can scale without fear.
