Overview
Application Category Rules offer the ability to establish policies based on Application Categories in Cisco Umbrella. With this development, it is no longer necessary to choose specific applications when you want to set a policy for a whole category of applications. As a result, access policies can automatically apply to any new controllable application that is added to Umbrella's continually increasing set of supported cloud applications.
Create Rules Based on Application Categories
To create rules based on application categories, choose from a variety of Application Categories, such as Cloud Storage, Office Productivity, or Generative AI. By doing so, the established rule can apply to all current and forthcoming applications added to those specified categories.
Previously, when an Application Category was selected, it generated a rule encompassing only the applications that were part of that category at the time. And to apply policy to new applications added to the category, you had to manually select each new application as it became available.
Expected Behavior for Both New and Preexisting Application Category Selections
When making a new selection of Application Categories, the rules automatically encompass all new applications as they are added, adhering to the new behavior.
However, for preexisting Application Category selections, you need to reselect the Application Categories to activate this new functionality.
