Introduction
This document describes how automatic updates function for the Umbrella roaming client and outlines options for managing update scheduling.
Overview of Automatic Updates
The Umbrella Roaming Client automatically updates to the latest available version by downloading new releases from Umbrella when they become available.
- Umbrella does not use fixed release cycles; updates are released as needed for new features, bug fixes, and behavioral changes.
- You can subscribe to the release notification forum to receive email updates regarding new releases.
- You cannot prevent your organization from receiving the latest Umbrella Roaming Client updates.
- To gain control over update management and scheduling, upgrade to Secure Client, which provides these capabilities.
Automatic Update Process
1. The Umbrella roaming client checks the Umbrella API via HTTPS for updates every 1–2 hours.
2. If a newer version is available, the client downloads it to a temporary folder:
3. After detecting a new version, the client selects a random time between 5 and 20 minutes to begin installation. This randomized delay, known as "jitter," prevents a large number of clients from downloading updates simultaneously, reducing the risk of network saturation for both Umbrella infrastructure and customer networks with limited bandwidth.
