Unable to transition custom statuses in Findings or Investigations after upgrading to ES 8.6.1 or 8.7 - "Failed to update finding: Failed to update status from custom_status_1 to custom_status_2 because the transition is not allowed"

Applicability

Description

After upgrading to ES 8.6.1 or 8.7, Users on Analyst Queue cannot transition between custom statuses on Findings or Investigations.  This is due to a known issue as reported in BLUERIDGE-25826.  The workaround is to explicitly add role ess_admin to ALL custom statuses.  Issue is resolved in ES 8.8 or newer version

Investigation

Issue affects only custom statuses, it does not have issue with Out of the Box (OOTB) statuses

Issue is reproducible by attempting to transition from/to a custom Finding Status

Error seen:  Failed to update finding: Failed to update status from custom_status_1 to custom_status_2 because the transition is not allowed

It was determined that this is a known issue as reported in BLUERIDGE-25826

This affects custom status in ES versions 8.6.1 and 8.7

Resolution

Issue BLUERIDGE-25826 shows that this is resolved in ES 8.8 or newer version

Workaround is to explicitly add ess_admin role to ALL transitions for custom Statuses

If the custom statuses are being transition to OOTB statuses, you will have to add ess_admin to those transitions on the OOTB statuses as well
