Issue

An organization needs to migrate their Secure Firewall Management Center Virtual (FMCv) from VMware ESXi to Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor. The environment consists of a single FMCv managing multiple Firewall Threat Defense (FTD) devices.

Environment

  • FMCv version 7.6.2.1. Other software versions are also affected.

  • Current deployment on VMware ESXi hypervisor.

  • Target deployment on Microsoft Hyper-V hypervisor.

Resolution

Use Export/Import capabilities to move configurations over from one FMC to another.

Warning: Using the "configure-model.sh" script to perform model migration is entirely unsupported by Cisco TAC.

Licensing Information

FMCv Licenses are not hypervisor-specific. With Smart Software Licensing, users can check in and check out licenses to use on different platforms. Licenses are no longer locked to a specific platform.

Cause

Hyper-V and VMWare are considered different models from an FMC Standpoint so Backup/Restore and Model Migration are not supported.

In this case use the Export/Import feature to migrate configurations from the source to the target FMC.
