Getting the following error when setting up DB Connect on a new server while trying to rebuild DB Connect
str' object has no attribute 'decode' or "JAVA_Home does not exist"
1. Check the Java path you are trying to add into the JRE.
Make sure you are NOT adding the Splunk path for example "/opt/splunk/java/jre1.8.0_256/bin/", this because it is a Splunk path and what we need is the "external path" from the JRE installation on the machine itself, the current path with /opt/splunk is not valid therefore needs to be change.
2. Confirm the right path, display the paths on the CLI with the following command:
sudo update-alternatives --config java
Example
sudo update-alternatives --config java
[sudo] password for user:
There are 3 programs which provide 'java'.
Selection Command
-----------------------------------------------
+ 1 java-1.8.0-openjdk.x86_64 (/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-1.8.0.262.b10-0.el7_8.x86_64/jre/bin/java)
* 2 /usr/java/jdk-11.0.7/bin/java
3 java-11-openjdk.x86_64 (/usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-11.0.7.10-4.el7_8.x86_64/bin/java)
Enter to keep the current selection[+], or type selection number:
3. The one with the "+" is the path we need to add the first one for example:
/usr/lib/jvm/java-1.8.0-openjdk-1.8.0.262.b10-0.el7_8.x86_64/jre
Do not add the portion that says /bin/java
Restart Splunk
Note: It is recommended to add the path directly into the splunkweb , sometimes via CLI it might not work the first time and you will need to restart more than once.
