Applicability

Splunk Synthetic Monitoring, Splunk Application Performance Monitoring (IM), Splunk Application Performance Monitoring (APM), Splunk Real User Monitoring (RUM)

Description

When a user logs into Splunk Observability Cloud via SSO the default role assumed is Power User. This needs to be changed to read-only user role instead.

Investigation

SSO users logging into Splunk Observability Cloud default to the "Power User" role.

Resolution

Splunk Engineering is working on enhancing Splunk Observability Cloud's user role management, including the ability to modify default SSO-assigned roles (e.g., assigning "Read-Only" by default), with an expected release in May 2025 (tracked in Splunk internal Jira RDMP-2543).

Until the May release, user roles can be:

1) manually adjusted via the UI (bulk edits are supported)

2) or programmatically via the Splunk Observability Cloud API.

3) Another option is to run a Python script every 4 hours to automatically downgrade users to "Read-Only" unless they are listed in the exclude list.
