Applicability
Splunk Enterprise
Description
Set a backfill time range that is shorter than the summary time range:
When indexing a large amount of data with a Splunk deployment and adjusting the Max Summarization Search Time range for a slow-running summary-populating search is not an option, an alternative option is the Backfill Range setting.
Backfill Range creates a second "backfill time range" that is set within the summary range. Splunk software builds a partial summary that initially only covers this shorter time range. After that, the summary expands with each new event summarized until it reaches the limit of the larger summary time range. At that point the full summary is complete and events that age out of the summary range are no longer retained.
Investigation
Here are some example scenarios:
Summary Range: Need to summarize data on an hourly basis, summarizing the past 24 hours of data every hour. Backfill Range: Backfilling the data for the past 7 days.
-
- Here is an example to illustrate how Summary Range and Backfill Range work together in Splunk's data model acceleration.
Scenario:
Data needs accelerated in a data model. The goal is to summarize data on an hourly basis, covering the past 24 hours of data every hour. The summary includes data from the past 7 days by configuring a backfill.
Step 1: Set Up the Summary Range
Objective: Summarize data every hour, covering the last 24 hours.
- Summary Range Settings:
- Summarization Interval: Every hour
- Data Range: Past 24 hours
- Explanation: Every hour, Splunk will summarize data from the previous 24 hours. For example, if it's currently 3:00 PM, the summary will include data from 3:00 PM yesterday to 3:00 PM today.
- Configuration in Splunk:
- Data Model: Go to the data model needing accelerated.
- Acceleration Settings: In the Acceleration tab, set the Summary Range to summarize data every hour and cover the past 24 hours.
- Example Use Case: If summarizing user activity logs, the summary might include total logins, errors, or specific events for the past 24 hours, updated hourly.
Step 2: Configure the Backfill Range
Objective: Backfill the data model with data from the past 7 days.
- Backfill Range Settings:
- Backfill Duration: 7 days
- Interval: 1 hour (to match the summary range)
- Explanation: The backfill process will populate the summary with data for the past 7 days.
- Backfill Process:
- Start Time: 7 days ago
- End Time: The current time
- Splunk will execute the summary search for each hour, starting from 7 days ago until the current time, creating summaries for the entire period.
- Implementation in Splunk:
- Backfill Script: Use Splunk’s command line or a scripted approach to trigger the backfill process, running searches that generate summary data for the past 7 days.
- Scheduled Backfill: Another approach is setting up a scheduled search that runs hourly, backfilling the data until the summary is complete.
Example Timeline:
- Current Time: 3:00 PM on August 23rd
- Summary Search: Summarizes data from 3:00 PM on August 22nd to 3:00 PM on August 23rd.
- Backfill Operation: Covers data from 3:00 PM on August 16th to 3:00 PM on August 23rd.
Visualization:
- Summary Range: This is a rolling window that captures the last 24 hours of data, summarized every hour.
- Backfill Range: This retroactively fills in data for the past 7 days, ensuring historical data is included in the summary.
Considerations:
- Performance: Running hourly summaries and backfilling for 7 days can be resource-intensive, so it’s advisable to monitor system performance and schedule backfilling during off-peak hours.
- Data Completeness: Ensure the backfill process completes successfully to avoid any gaps in summary data.
Summary:
Configuring both the Summary Range and Backfill Range will create a comprehensive and up-to-date summary in Splunk. The Summary Range ensures continuous data collection, while the Backfill Range ensures that historical data is accounted for, providing a complete view of the data over time.
Resolution
Best Practices
- Define Appropriate Ranges: Carefully determine the Summary and Backfill Ranges based on data usage patterns and business requirements.
- Automate Processes: Use automation to regularly update summaries and backfill data to maintain data accuracy and efficiency.
- Monitor Performance: Continuously monitor the performance of the summarization and backfilling processes to ensure they meet the desired performance metrics.
- Adjust Ranges as Needed: Be flexible in adjusting the Summary and Backfill Ranges as data volumes and business needs change.
Conclusion
The Summary Range and Backfill Range are essential components in data model acceleration, working together to provide a balanced approach to data summarization and historical accuracy. By understanding and implementing these concepts effectively, organizations can ensure that their data models are optimized for performance, accuracy, and efficiency, enabling faster and more reliable data analysis.
