Bias-Free Language

Error messages will appear in splunkd.log when running some searches that look like the following
  
ERROR SearchParser - Missing a search command before '*'. Error at position '2' of search query 
'| * inputlookup append=T certificate * where'.

This is a benign message and is a known issue. 

 

Resolution

"The error is coming from the contentinfo system which is trying to make the dependency graph of the views, searches, data-models, etc. That system struggles when it comes upon searches that use tokens. It fills in the tokens with a wildcard and sends the search to the AST endpoint in order to parse it. Sometimes, a wildcard won't work though and the endpoint generates an error.

Thus, this isn't a real error but an artifact of the heuristic that contentinfo uses."

Upgrade to a version of Splunk where this fix is available, currently fixed in 7.2.10 and 8.0.3
