Bias-Free Language

The documentation set for this product strives to use bias-free language. For the purposes of this documentation set, bias-free is defined as language that does not imply discrimination based on age, disability, gender, racial identity, ethnic identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and intersectionality. Exceptions may be present in the documentation due to language that is hardcoded in the user interfaces of the product software, language used based on RFP documentation, or language that is used by a referenced third-party product. Splunk Enterprise

Investigation

When running the btool command and search for the attributes KV_MODE and AUTO_KV_JSON are set to json and true respectively:

splunk btool props list --debug <my_sourcetype_name>
/opt/splunk/etc/system/default/props.conf                   ADD_EXTRA_TIME_FIELDS = True
/opt/splunk/etc/system/default/props.conf                   ANNOTATE_PUNCT = True
/opt/splunk/etc/system/default/props.conf                   AUTO_KV_JSON = True  <================
/opt/splunk/etc/system/default/props.conf                   BREAK_ONLY_BEFORE =
/opt/splunk/etc/system/default/props.conf                   BREAK_ONLY_BEFORE_DATE = True
/opt/splunk/etc/system/default/props.conf                   CHARSET = UTF-8
/opt/splunk/etc/apps/search/local/props.conf                DATETIME_CONFIG =
/opt/splunk/etc/apps/search/local/props.conf                INDEXED_EXTRACTIONS = json   <================

Resolution

As per documentation:

"Note: If you set INDEXED_EXTRACTIONS=JSON, check that you have not also set KV_MODE = json for the same source type, which would extract the JSON fields twice, at index time and again at search time."

So, you need to disable one of the attribute to stop the issue.

AUTO_KV_JSON (search-time field extraction)
INDEXED_EXTRACTION (index-time extraction)
