Splunk Enterprise

Description

  • NOTE: To install the Upgrade Readiness App, you must have installed Splunk Enterprise version 7.1, 7.2, or 7.3 with apps or add-ons. If you already upgraded to 8.0, this app can not be installed. 
  • In most cases, the admin may have overlooked the upgrade prerequisites for upgrading to 8.0. One of the prerequisites is to run the Upgrade Readiness tool found here: 

Investigation

The Splunk Platform Upgrade Readiness App is a tool for assisting with your transition between Python 2 and Python 3. Even if your deployment passes all checks, you still need to independently test your private and customized apps and add-on's for incompatibilities.

  • If any apps have CherryPy endpoints, the Web UI as a whole will not load upon upgrade to 8.0.
  • If any apps have Mako templates or Advanced XML, certain app-specific views will not load upon upgrade to 8.0.
  • This is true only for the UI. Other Python scripts will work fine, but it’s recommended to migrate to dual Python 2-3 compatible Python.
  • Please please please use the readiness app which is designed for this purpose. It should identify all CherryPy endpoints defined in web.conf. If an app is using CherryPy (aka the web UI won’t load) and has not defined the endpoint in web.conf, the readiness app can’t detect it (yet).

* Check the logs, specifically web_service.log and splunkd.log for messages relating to the issue. 


Resolution

Check the logs, specifically web_service.log for applications that are not compatible with Python 3 and move or delete the app(s). Lastly, restart Splunk.
