Applicability
Splunk Enterprise
Description
When using trying to monitor files which names don't change but the content does, Splunk is not working as expected, for example:
[monitor:///path/reports]
index = splunk_test
initCrcLength = 4096
ignoreOlderThan = 1d
disabled = 0
sourcetype = DiskUsage
Investigation
Splunk is indexing data based on the timestamp context in the file and not at the time that the file is actually generated, as the file captures date/time information based on the host details of that particular timezone.
Resolution
Set “DATETIME_CONFIG = CURRENT” in the props.conf file, because the new logs that are indexed will have the current time in the timestamp, which is likely to be the time when the file was created, the forwarder will monitor the file and forward it almost instantaneously.
Example:
$SPLUNK_HOME/etc/system/local/props.conf
[source::.../mylogs/*.log]
DATETIME_CONFIG = CURRENT
