In Splunk 10.0, the Python 3.7 (and 2.7) runtimes were removed leaving Python 3.9 as the only supported runtime. Starting with Splunk 10.2, an additional optionally selectable Python 3.13, has been added. Each Splunk app can independently opt in to Python 3.13 and must be updated to ensure compatibility.
Affected Parties: Any Splunk user utilizing apps that have proactively migrated to Python 3.13
Splunk has two different interpreter models that operate independently:
Controls:
modular inputs
custom search commands
REST handlers
Behavior:
Uses python.required during the Adoption Phase
Follows the dual-interpreter model documented in the Python 3.13 PRD and Developer Guide
Supports both 3.9 (default) and 3.13 (opt-in)
Splunk 10.2 will introduce a Python 3.13 runtime, the default Python runtime will remain Python 3.9.
Only developers who opt into Python 3.13 can run into compatibility issues at this point in time.
To migrate to Python 3.13, app developers will have to indicate a required Python runtime using the `python.required` configuration setting.
Splunk users can mitigate observed breakage by using the `python.required` flag to roll apps back to Python 3.9
