Oh, to today's expert insight series, we'll have our CSS specialist.00:00Steven Mena and Andrew Wong, that will do a presentation and demonstration for us. Our topic is going to be the inter site managed mode transition tool. UCSM to inter site migration.00:20And we will be using Slido today to enhance our experience. You should have a QR code on your screen that you can scan with your mobile device, phone or tablet that will produce the URL or hyperlink that you can simply click on to go to. Otherwise you can go to slido.com as it appears on the screen.00:40And use the word migration for both the join code and the passcode, and then you'll be able to participate in today's Q and A session, as well as some polls that we have. You'll be able to join us for that.01:00For those able to join and use Slido today, we would ask that you let us know where you're joining from city state continent, some indicator, so that we'll know where our audience is coming from.01:22Again, we have all of our joint credentials on the left. If you can join that and just freehand type in where you're joining from, looks like we've got.01:37At least one person so far that's going to join and give us that answer. All right, we got at least one person.01:54Undisabled to say they're from California. If you're unable to to use Webex?02:14Or Slido for whatever reason, just put that in the chat if you would, that will help us equally. We'll be able to get a feel for where our audience is sitting at. Now we also do have another question that is coming up. Is Slido we are interested in.02:19We'd like to know what your biggest challenge is as far as transitioning from legacy management tools to Cisco Intersight. Get that poll started. And it looks like from the options you'll have to choose, we'll.02:38Be able to indicate that you've got an understanding and adapting to new cloud based management workflows, that could be a challenge for you. The integration part using the existing infrastructure with the new platform smoothly, if that's a challenge, please let us know.02:56You'll also be able to indicate that the challenge is ensuring minimal disruption, always important. During the actual transition process itself, you could have had a challenge as far as training staff on new features.03:14And you also have the option to indicate that your challenge was aligning current operational processes with inter site capabilities. Now, to be fair, some of those inter site capabilities could be uncovered for you here today. Hopefully we will turn on some light bulbs for you.03:32And get you thinking in new directions as far as what is possible let me back up a second here and I did indicate that we had Steven and Andrew joining us.03:50Today to do our presentation and demonstration. I'll let you know that Stephen is a customer success specialist that has over ten years of experience in designing, sizing, and adapting or adopting data center infrastructure.04:09Cloud technologies, optimizing computing resources, infrastructure for hyper converged environments, and artificial intelligence. Now Andrew has over 15 years of experience at the system engineer.04:26And solutions architect. He previously worked in professional services and Cisco tech. Before becoming a CSS, he specializes in cloud architecture and orchestration.04:43Now with the results coming in, let me check those. On our 1st poll, where are you joining from? We've had indicators from Baton Ruge, California, and canon.05:06And as far as our poll results from our second question, let me share those with you here. Biggest challenges transitioning from legacy management tools over to intersight. Looks like we've had quite a few.05:23Attendees indicate what their challenge was and coming out on top is an understanding and adapting to new cloud based management workflows. Hopefully with today's topic, IMM, the presentation and the demonstration again will speak to whatever challenges you were having.05:41Having there and get you started on overcoming those. We will have Q and A running throughout today's event. You can access that via Slido. If you can't do Slido, please post your questions in chat.06:01At this point for our presentation, I'm going to hand it over to my good friend Stephen Minute and let him take it away. Over to you Steven. Thank you Joel. I'm gonna share my screen real quick right here. Please confirm if you have a chance to.06:25To see my yep oh that's good. Well, I'm going to get started with, well, with, with a question for you, right? And this is something that you may have not considered during the last the last years or the last month, but something that is going to happen in a new.06:41Future it has to do with the the support of the UCS manager solution and is I don't know how many of you or you heard this in one of the last from your partner or from from Cisco internals about the M eight is generation server is the last one that is going to support the UCS manager.07:01Your solution for for managing the servers and as well UCS manager as the, the solution, the console, you know, for managing the new your infrastructure is going to be supported until the end of life of the B 206 servers and the same as well, the, the.07:215108 chassis in 2030. All right? So with this in mind, this brings the question about how do I move or what's gonna happen with UCS manager or what's the next recommended option or next path for me managing my my infrastructure, alright? And many of you.07:41Do you already have heard about UCS? I'm sorry about inter site managed mode, and for the ones that have not heard about it, we're going to do like a, like a quick overview about inter site managed mode before going to the options to migrate to the solution. All right? So inter site managed mode.08:01Basically, if you are familiar with with the UCS manager, inter site manage mode is different because different because it's a cloud platform that is going to be used for connecting your devices and managing from the cloud. Even though you can connect UCS manager domains, e.g..08:20Interconnects that like starting in 6060 260 300 as well. Even though they those are NO longer supported by Cisco.08:41In terms of end of sale, some of them they are still supporting on inter site you can connect them. And basically when connecting those UCS domains on inter site you will be able to execute a set of a set of tasks, you know, monitoring, but as well as set of tasks. But the thing is for the the config.08:51Operation component, the configuration that e.g. you wanna change any internal options on the server, like the the networking, change the policies or modify different different objects that you already have configured or different options that you have already configured in the server. You will need to access the UCS manager console.09:11As well, even though those fabric interconnects are connected to inter site. So the the control plane still remains on on UCS manager. All right?09:31But some sort of some operation options can be, can be done from, from, from inter site like firmware upgrades, operating system installation, more alarms monitoring among others, right? So, but when talking about the configuration itself.09:40That's something that remains on UCS manager. When talking about rack servers like C series standalone rack servers that are managed by the integrated integrated management console, you can as well connect into inter site and with the the introduction of inter site managed mode.10:01To which basically was introduced on the 6400 series interconnects. Those comes with that with an option, with an operating option mode that is called inter site managed mode or IMN. Basically, when you start configuring the servers, you will hand over the control plane to inter site platform in so.10:21You will be NO, you will be able will be able not only to monitor and run operation functions but as well you will be able to configure from the cloud your policies, your server profiles, different, different, profiles like domain profiles chats profiles for your blade servers as well among different.10:41Option. So your configuration or the, the whole configuration con the control plane will be hand over to inter site and you will be able not only to configure from the cloud, but as well to push that configuration to your use inter site management mode domains once you are ready, they are in physical.11:01Being installed, you can start, you know, pushing that configuration. So it will be give you so many additional options in terms of managing your, your infrastructure. Now.11:21As mentioning, inter site managed mode is is an alternative so in and you will be able to keep doing e.g. your policy based configuration on your own infrastructure, and basically as well inter site leverages on industry standards in standard based API communications to your.11:31Endpoints, this is something that we are going to discuss in a minute but it normally uses the device connector, you know, that is already installed in your UCS domains, you know, to start communications, alright so it will help you to standardize, you know, the, the software platform configuration using the single intersite cloud platform and as well you will keep the.11:52Using the policies and and the profiles across your fabric interconnects or even across your standalone servers, you know, like your rack servers. So this is something as an introduction. All right? Now.12:12We will detail in a few minutes, but this is just kind of like a hint for you for transitioning to inter site managed mode normally you will have like two main options, right? For the greenfield deployments, e.g., you have, maybe you have new UCS deployment or new UCS UCS.12:26X series servers, alright, and you're planning e.g. moving, you know, from from a fabric interconnect maybe 6400 that is working on UCS manager mode and then you need to move to UCS.12:46To to IMM and sorry mode so in that case migrating those kind of domains, even though maybe there are greenfield, like totally new or existing as well existing domain that maybe working with fabric interconnects like 6400 and with servers and M five or M six generation.13:01And they need to be moved forward, you know, to a inter site managed mode configuration. So that's that's another option. So in that case, you depending on how you're doing, e.g., you may have, you may still have some UCS fabric interconnects 62 or 6300 and as well both kind of domains.13:21Like legacy domains using UCS manager or domains using IMM as well they can coexist do even during the process of migrating, you know, to intersite, so that's another option. We will see a little bit more detail with with this during this session. All right? With inter site managed mode, basically.13:41You will have the option to configure all of your instances, all of your abstraction abstract objects on on inter site, like your pools, e.g., your IP pools, your Mac pools. Policies as well as well, you know, depending on the, on the device that you are configuring, you may need to configure domain policies.14:00Server or chassis policies and one of the advantages as well is.14:20The remember the profiles that you are building, e.g., the domain, the server or the chassis profile is kind of like a, like a Lego figured right? They are built with the small pieces which basically are the policies. So you will be able to configure these kind of policies and as well the templates, if you're not very familiar with UCS manager, this is some.14:25Things similar, you know, in UCS manager you you build your policies and profiles and then you apply them to the servers. But in this case.14:45You will be able to do it in advance, even you don't have to e.g. install immediately your domains, your or your your your devices, you can start configuring all this. You can start planning the configuration of your devices and once, once they are already installed physically installed, you can push that configuration as well.14:52Right? In terms of architecture, this is something interesting because UCS manager in the past used used an internal proprietary database that is called UCS management information Tree or MIT. Basically, that database to.15:10Model in back in the day every pieces of hardware and software configuration is a managed object, right? So and the the the MIT basically is is as I mentioned is an internal database and models, you know, as a managed object object every, every piece of hardware and software.15:30Alright, so back in the day this the organization of this one is the components were organized kind of like an inverted three schema, you know, starting from root to object, from root object and to to the rest of the managed objects that you have in your infrastructure. So back in the day.15:47It uses the XML API protocol, right? So, that's a little bit different and and now they compared with the modern Jason protocol that we normally use in IMM and in that case, so that's kind of like a different because when using inter site managed mode.16:08We are moving from a model that is the normally calls the protocol, the redfish protocol. All right? So the red fish, base standard is a red I'm sorry, Redfish is a base standard model, you know, and basically it's it's an open industry standard API for for managing data centers, alright?16:27So not only data center but servers and and and networking equipment alright for the ones that you're familiar, this was created back in the day by the, by the DM TF, the distributed management task force, and it was normally the actually the purpose was to replace all the older protocols like IPMI with a modern.16:47And more secured and as well a web friendly approach alright? So these standard normally use the RESTful API.17:07Right that normally works over HTTP or or HTTPS as well and instead of the the back the the the legacy comments, you know, this API this this protocol used the API, the API calls like get the put a patch or post, you know, to retrieve information.17:16To update devices or execute different actions in, in your managed devices. All right? So this is pretty much something very important because it will expand the capa the capacity of inter site as a platform because not you will be able to support the OEM extension OEM vendor and extensions.17:36You know from from different manufacturers that are supported on inter site, you have options, e.g., for VIC, you know, for, for the, the card management, you know, or or even for management on inter site and you can create or customize different actions directly for your infrastructure. All right? As well, as mentioned since this is.17:56This is an standard model, you know? Basically you can add or you can support 3rd party servers like CA90, let's say five, the Dell or HP servers that can be managed as well from, from intersight. All right?18:17No, now with that in mind, you may think, ok, I would like to go to inter site managed mode, but how can I move? Because luckily I have to configure all of the objects, the policies, the server profiles or and every single object internally on inter site.18:32I'm sorry on UCS manager, how do I move this, you know, to the inter site cloud platform? Remember, you are, you had to previously create an account and when using maybe your Cisco user ID and then you already have an account, how do I move all the information from my domains to.18:52My Cloud platform. And that's when you you have this option that we call the inter site managed model transition tool tool, right? Basically it's a, it's a tool that you install in in your virtual environment, right? We have three, actually we have three options, you know, we have for Red Hat for VMware.19:11Sxi and for Microsoft Hyper V So you install that virtual machine and basically will help you not only to connect to your inter site but assess your current configuration on your UCS domain. I'm sorry, you connect it to inter site for later, but then you will connect to this tool to your UCS domains.19:31To have visibility and have an assessment and eventually convert all of your policies in from UCS manager to into IMM policies, alright? So this has NO cost actually is nor it doesn't require license, you know, to deploy it actually you go to the soft.19:52For the Cisco software download page, you get the, the, the corresponding image, the over image to install it in your in your infrastructure, and basically this will this will help you to make easier, you know, transitioning from UCS manager to IMM.20:11Right? Actually, you will, it will help you to automate most of these steps, you know, to transition from the from UCS manager to IMN. You will see it during the during the demo that we have prepared for you. All right? And as a, as I mentioned, this isn't a standalone solution. You will download it and installing on your.20:29Virtual environment and normally it does actually as you can see it on the on the right, the right hand of this image, the, the tool the the web link for you to download, we will share it in the chat in a, in a in a few minutes, but as well is one of the things that you have right here is not only help you to ***.20:51Yeah, but once you connect to your inter site account, it will help you to push those images, convert them and push them to intersight. All right?21:09So as we mentioned before, we will have pretty much two well two main use cases we will see a few, a few different variations, but it's basically when you have UCS manager or maybe you are managing your domains using UCS central. Remember UCS Central is this solution that back in the day we used to manage.21:17Multiple UCS manager domains and then you will be able to push them or maybe you are using inter site maybe on on this on an existing SaaS or a connected virtual appliance which is just basically a local instance of inter site or your or in a private virtual appliance, and then you want.21:38You want to consolidate into one single account, so you will be able to do this this by using the transition tool as well, alright?21:57Now, in terms of the primary cases, we're gonna discuss a few of them, but basically, we have e.g. deployments on UCX series, you know? Well, you will extend, e.g., the existing server profiles or templates that you already have in in your UCX series, to inter site.22:06Maybe you are still using UCS manager e.g. for for that matter and you will it will help you to convert not only the server policies but as well different fabric configuration policies and domains into inter site inter site like domains and policies. All right? Or maybe you have existing server, e.g..22:26And and IMN domains that you want to consolidate as well into another, account or as well you can have an entire UCS domain, but this is one of the most common scenarios. You have a UCS domain that you want to move to to IMN. One of the advantages here is even e.g. if you.22:46Have your firmware not in the latest versions e.g., it will help you to assess if your your firmware, your software, e.g., the the objects that you have right there and as well your physical equipment to assess if they are supported on inter site managed mode. So basically it will assess and once this is done, it will perform that.23:06Version of these objects to IMN. Eventually require some downtime, this is something to be considered, but as well, one of the interesting things is you don't have, e.g., if you have a massive infrastructure, you don't have to move the entire domains or you actually will have an option to move.23:26Parts of the UCS domain, you will see it during the demo but if you you want to move, e.g., just a few server profiles or or a few policies to intersite even if you want to test it that's something that can be done. So that's, that's something interesting. All right? The other scenarios you already mentioned, e.g., you have.23:44Have a different inter site form factor in case you have connected virtual appliance or private virtual appliance, basically it will clone all the the infrastructure, the policies and the templates and it will move it to your new inter site account. E.g., when you have massive, massive, a massive infrastructure and you want the.24:04That you perform a bulk claiming. You can, e.g., use CB CSB files, you know, to and you know providing their corresponding credentials of of those files you can use them, you know, to move that infrastructure as well. Or eventually if you want to simplify the operating system installation even firmware operates, that's something that as well can be done.24:24On on the transition tool, even, you know, moving forward to inter site as well.24:44Alright? Now, the transition tool, basically just as we already saw it is this file that will help you to convert all of your objects that you have on the UCS manager is free of costs, NO additional license required, and as well as.24:48Go with a different UCS manager or inter site deployment as well. We'll help you to see simplify the the process of transitioning and automated, you know, the the steps, you know, to avoid doing it, you know, in a, in a step by step manner. So it will help you to do it in a, in a faster way, right? And how basically as I'm.25:08Just a reminder is a file or a file that you can download from the Cisco download website portal. So that's something that we will see in a few minutes. Once you have downloaded the image.25:28Right the the steps, you know, to, to transition is basically download and install the OVA file. This is something important because during that process you need to make sure that virtual machine you already have configured, e.g., the, the, the DNS the DNS records. You already have the to.25:39You already have to configure maybe the, the firewall, you know, to enable the communication between the OVA virtual machine to inter site as well. That's something that some real requirements that you need to perform.25:59And we will see that in a, in a, in a few minutes. And once you have deployed the file and you are running the the tool, you need to connect to your UCS domains in case you have a user and password, well, they will be required, so you will pull the inventory and check and generate the.26:11Configuration reports, ok? And once, e.g., this is done, you will have an option to push to inter site or even to download the the readiness report, you know, for further analysis. So that's something that that you can do, you have it's optional, and in terms of the 1st step, the deployment, you need to check some prerequisites.26:31E.g., for VMware you all at least you will need the ESXi 6.0 for for more recent versions of the tool, maybe you will need a more recent version but.26:52You will see some minimal requirements for the virtual machine and as well, you know, checking as mentioned you know the the network connectivity requirements already mentioned, e.g., do you need the TCP ports to 22 and 04:43, and as well you know checking the access you know for the DNS, e.g., in case you need to configure.27:03The DNS domains, the, the NTP server and, the, e.g., you need to configure the proxy server as well, that's something required. All right?27:23Once you already have done this, you will connect to your UCS manager. This is the step two. You will need to enter your your FQDDNA DN I'm sorry or your or the domain IP of the of the domain, the the UCS manager, enter the username and password and if.27:34There is a proxy server in between so you need to configure it. And then you will have to connect to.27:54The the step two is connect to search the UCS domain alright? So the transition tool will try to connect to the UCS domain and basically fetch or grab the the configuration and inventory information to analyze it. And it will take a few minutes because depending on how big is your infrastructure, this will take between five or more, even more minutes.28:02Depending on on how many domains or or how big is the domain that it needs to be analyzed, and basically one is when it's done, once this is done, you will, you will be shown across the button, you know, to, to close the pop up. So in that case you'll need to leave it leave the work and then when it is done, you will, it will be just.28:23A readiness report with e.g. you will show you how ready is your infrastructure in terms of hardware compatibility and then it will check as well you know the port policies every single policy that you have configured, the server profiles, the the rest of the config configurable.28:44Objects that needs to be checked, it will be verified.29:03Right? And then you will see e.g. the readiness report as as I mentioned. So previous prior to the transition, right, you will you will you like to see, e.g., you can download or generate the report directly on the tool and, and check it you know.29:06Site to to verify, you know, on, on the left hand you will see e.g. the different objects that were analyzed, the different sections from, from a specific domain.29:26Alright, so when when you migrate you will like to maintain some identities, e.g., in your policies, your UUIDs, your macs, under different pools and in order to when converting, you know, to maintain the, the, the naming, but in a way that it will be.29:35Visible on inter site in in a.29:55In a comprehensive manner, right? In that case, e.g., you need to verify when you have this kind of during the readiness report that's something that that maybe you will not see if you download it, that's why it's recommended to check it here. E.g., when you see this alerts on the left hand, it's required maybe to.29:58Equipment or maybe to the policies that are to belong to that specific equipment. So in that case, e.g., in the server some some servers maybe impacted for.30:18The specific pools that are not consistent or are not are are invalid, you know, it cannot be transferred or or converted to intersite so a modification may need required, you know, before sending them to to inter site alright? And normally the readiness report will have plenty plenty of useful information alright.30:30Like e.g., you will have a map, a mapping table like the one that you are seeing here.30:50Showing you, e.g., how the UCS policy, the UCS manager policy looks like, you know, with the origin name, e.g., the organization that it belongs and how it's going to look or any actually what is the type of policy that is going to have an inter site because you will see, you will see that on.30:55As well in a in a few more minutes, but when transferring, when converting policies, they are they are not mapped one to one. So in those cases, some policy may change name, it may change, e.g., the how is constituted so that's something to keep in mind, but pretty much is you will have this kind of information to let you know.31:14You know how it's going to look like, what kind of inter site policy is going to map, e.g., from an origin policy and what is gonna be the organizational name on inter site for you to be.31:34For you to be sure how it's gonna look like then, alright? As well, it will give you, e.g., how it's going to the the different objects, not only the policies but e.g. different ports IDs, server ports IDs, different stand uplink ports.31:48As well, how they are going to be mapped from UCS manager to inter site alright? What is gonna be, e.g., the ports from a UCS fabric interconnect, how it's going to be converted or produced when moving to inter site, so that's something as well that is going to be important to to check as well.32:08You will need to be careful when it, e.g., when transferring or or converting from an inter site I'm sorry from a UCS domain when a fabric interconnect with much more ports than the one that you are moving forward. So because eventually you will have some inconsistencies, so it's important, you know, that's why it's important checking, you know, the mapping that you're gonna have in.32:29The, in the in the report that you are generating. All right? And once you have already checked and you already modified, e.g., every single section on your left, you will have an option to download the the the conf the readiness report or eventually if you already logged to a inter site account.32:48You will have the chance to to push it, right? And in that case when connecting to inter site you will have to e.g. check that there is a button that says next when when when clicking the inter site and the transition tool will ask you to connect to inter site using your Cisco user ID, and then once you are already communicated with.33:08Intersite, you will have an option to push the configuration.33:28The, currently the transition tool is in the release 5.1. We already having, we already have included major new features. E.g., we already included the LDA LDAP conversion support so e.g. if you have a UCS manager or UCS central LDAP.33:32Instances of configuration this can be converted to intersite and in that case you will have a possibility to convert.33:52LDAP domain profiles and LDAP inter site appliance, you know, to a policy in, into inter site deployment. All right? As well do you have the organization mapping for calling is will give you plenty of.34:01Flexibility, you know, to control where, where are you assigning the policies, you know, where they are placed because something important on inter site is you when you create the the the when when when converting the configuration, you will have an option as well to map different organizations, you know, that that comes from the.34:18Configuration that you have in UCS manager, but as well, you will have the flexibility if you want to modify different policies or or server profiles that you want to assign to a specific organization, that's something that you will have an option to do it from the tool, you know, so the transition tool so and as well, if you will, you wanna keep it.34:38That's the the exact way, the exact way as it was on UCS manager you want you can configure as well or set up the option to one to one mapping or one to many mapping, e.g., for your policies.34:58As well, did we have added more devices that you know the supported devices to the transition tool? E.g., we recently added with this version the M M A generation inter servers and as well for UCS manager the and UCS central, the, the releases that you see right.35:12There 4.36 or UCS manager and 2.11 for UCS central, right? And as well you can convert now Maxic policies from your local deployments to inter site managed mode.35:32Alright, there are some limitations and caveats for now, e.g., there is a limited support for some advanced configuration for virtual links and virtual HBA HBAs. So, and as well there are some implementations between UCS manager. There are some differences between UCS manager and.35:44When converting all the policies as mentioned before, that's why you have the the readiness report right there to see if there is any inconsistency, but they will be converted in the best way possible, you know, the best extent possible. All right, given the differences in the mapping as well. So that's why, e.g., applicable differences will be listed or will be shown during that.36:06Report, alright?36:27For this section, there are some migraine, the migration considerations I'm gonna pass the ball to my colleague, Andrew. Andrew I don't know if you're ready, but so thank you Stephen for bringing up doing the presentation on.36:29The two overview as well as the IMM mode itself.36:49So now I'm gonna talk about some of the migration considerations when you're trying to migrate from UCSM to our IMM. So 1st thing is what IMM transition two can do is it will map the policies from your UCSM into IMM. However, there are some policy ma.36:55Mapping differences that you need to take into consideration. 1st thing is that not all UCS manager policies have a direct mapping in in the site.37:15And I have a table with a couple of examples here, but e.g., in the UCS manager, you have your maintenance policy. However, on the inter site side, there are NO equivalent policies or direct equivalent policies to the maintenance policy. The reason is being that in the inter site model, the.37:25The profile assignment and a deployment workflow will deter with the site when the server will being reboot or the maintenance timing is handled during the.37:45Both assignment and deployment workflow, so you don't need to have an explicit policy to control that. And then another example is the threshold and the stats threshold policy in UCSM. Again intersight, we don't have direct equivalent because in inter site instead you'll be using the inter site alarm rules and the email notifi.37:57Cases to configure like under what threshold you want to be alerted when something happens. And then another big one is our dynamic reader connection.38:16Dynamic vnet connection policy or the network this has NO direct equivalent in Intersight as well, Instead is using a different architecture. So what you actually do is that when you define your LAN connectivity policy, you will at that point define your vnics, and then if you want to have.38:27A redundant vnic, then you can define multiple vnics and assign the failover order to that. So that is how you achieve the equivalent of using the connection policy or the network redundancy template in inside, and then the similar using the VMQ US neck or iov connect.38:47Instead of defining each one of them as a separate policy is now folder under the vnet or the vnet templates. So these are some of the differences between the users manager and the inter site policy.39:08Are there are also some minor changes is that some policies are named differently. E.g., in UCS management you have the local test config policy, but in intersight, it's just gonna be called storage policy. Similarly, we have the KVM management policy in UCSM, but inner site is called virtual KBM.39:22And then UCSM we have the IPMI access profile, but inside is called the IPMI overland policy. These are not.39:42All the differences, if you want to understand more of it, please refer to the IMM transition to user guide for details. There's a whole section talking about the con how the conversion will happen, what will be converted and what will not be converted et cetera.39:52And then one more thing I want to talk about is that if you are doing a UCSM to inter site after IMM migration, there are scenarios that, so basically there are two ways it happen. One is that you have an existing FI that is running UCSM and.40:11You're gonna convert that same FI into IMN.40:30So if that's the case, then this slide won't apply to you. However, you may have a scenario that let's say you have N 6454 running your B 200 M fives and then you want to migrate your UCSM domain into a 6536 runnings B 220M.40:34In that case, there are some considerations that you need to be careful is that what the tool will do for the Interconnect itself is that it will create a part policy. Basically it will kind of like tells you how the.40:55Ports are being configured in the site. The port policy that is created will depend on the source of interconnect.41:14There are some conversions that can happen. E.g., if you're if you're migrating from 6332, then when the executes, it will create the 6536 as the equivalent port policy in inner site. For some of them.41:23There will be NO conversion. E.g., at 6454 in users manager, when it got converted, it will be the part policy on inter site will also be 6454.41:42Why is it important is that, like I mentioned before, a port policy is how the Fabric interconnect ports are being configured in intersight. And then when you create a port policy, the question it will ask is that what type of Fabric Interconnect will this policy apply to?41:55And unfortunately that port policy, the FI type cannot be changed afterward. So there will be a scenario if you're migrating to a fiber interconnect model that has a less port count. E.g., if you're migrating to a 6454 to a 6536.42:13Because you have last port. So the will not be able to map any existing ports into the new Fi model because you got last so it doesn't know how to properly map it. And then when it come creates a policy on inside it will just create the port policy type at 6454.42:31And that policy cannot be used on a 6536 FI. So in that case, you need to create a new port policy from scratch. Although all your VLAN policies and the vsan policies, they will still be carried over so basically you just need to create a new port policy specify the.42:51The FI model and then during the VLAN and the vsan configuration, you just pick what the policy that has been migrated from the IMM transition too. So this is just one consideration that you need to take into account if you are moving from a different model, you're moving across a different.43:11The models of fabric interconnect.43:31Alright, and finally we'll talk about some of the migration best practices. This is the something that we have seen in the field quite often, so I just want to make sure that we bring you you'll be aware of this. So before the migration, there's a big one to identify any dynamic V next on the network network redundancy template because as mentioned before.43:35They don't have a direct inter site equivalent, so basically you need to plan and redesign the during the creation and designing your LAN connectivity policy.43:55And then also to identify the FI port configuration in case the source and destination FI models are different. Like e.g., if your source FI is a 6041 oh eight, but then you're migrating to a, let's say 6652. So then you need to make sure that to.44:09Redesign your port planning to see how to map 108 ports down to 52 ports. So there's something you should be can you need to take a consideration. And then when you run the IMM transition two, make sure you're using the latest version of the IMM transition tool.44:26Usually because it has a bug fixes and that also supports new hardware models and support more policies etc. And then when you run the 1st time, make sure you always run it in the assessment mode 1st, which we'll show later in a demo and then also make sure to save and review the assessment report and address any.44:46Warnings and errors that the assessment report has bring up.45:06And finally, before you do the pre deployment, review the policies and the profiles created in inter site before you actually deploy the migrated policies and profiles onto your devices. One other big thing is to make sure that the VLAN and the policies that is created actually matches.45:13Your production, I'll just do a safety check. And finally, review the land and signed connectivity policies for the and VHPA configuration. E.g., we want to make sure that the PCI orders are correct. You have assigned the correct number of vnets. If you have any failovers, i. E.45:33You have configured the failover mode appropriately for your LAN connectivity on assigned connectivity policies for your virtual hpas.45:56Alright, and finally I'm gonna show you a brief demo of the IMM transition tool itself. So the IMM translation tool is just a OVA that you download from Cisco, and then once you've download it, you can deploy it on.46:07To your hypervisor, can be VMware, V center or it can be Microsoft hypervie, et cetera.46:26Once you have deployed the OVA and then start a VM, you should have IP address and then all you need to do is go to the IP address using the web browser, it asks you to log in using the admin password that you have created during the deployment process and then you will be in the IMM translation to your.46:35So on the left hand side, you can see there are three sections, your transition, device management and software repository. So device management is where you add your devices like such as UCSM, UCS central, or Intersight into the IMM transition tool itself.46:56You can also do do the adding devices during the migration or creating the transition itself, but you can also add it ahead of time. E.g., if I want to do that, I just add device and that will ask you what type of device you want to add. Is it UCS manager, is it user central?47:14Intersight.47:34It's MC or IM domain, e.g., if I say UCS manager, then it will ask me where is my users manager, the IP address of the FQDN, username and password, and I want to enter a custom label for IMM transferring to itself or if I'm adding an inter site account.47:35Then you select is it inter site SaaS or is it virtual appliance if it's a SaaS, is it a US or EU? And they will ask you to provide the API key and the secret key just in case you need a reminder, API key you created, you log in into your inter site account.47:54Under settings, under keys and this is where you create your API keys. You just generate API key, give a description, specify the open API schema, you should be using version three and then specify the expiration time of the.48:14API key itself I think by default it is set to 180 days, though it depends on your account settings in the site, you may have modified to a longer and shorter period, but in general you should set expiration time to API key to make sure that once it has service purpose, it will expire and.48:34No one else will be able to use it for any unintended purposes.48:54So for the you you put in, is it a US or EU region and an API key and a secret key? If it's an appliance VM similar, you just tells the where is the appliance VM using the FQDN and then you add the API key and the secret key into it.49:01And then you save it and then you have added your devices into the system too. E.g., you can see in this list I have added a couple UCS manager, I have added the inter site SaaS as well as the inter site appliance in here.49:21On the server repository, you can actually use the IMM transition tool VM itself as a HTTP repository because obviously it's running a HTTP server, so you want to add any OS install image or firmware upgrade images, you can use.49:37It to upload it and you have your own HTTP repository. Although in most proper environments there should be a dedicated repository for such purposes already. But in case if you just need something quick and easy, let's say I just want to upload my OS image, upgrade a firmware image.49:56To use in the lab. Setting up a corporate repository that you can use this too to just quickly.50:16Use it as a file server. Alright, and finally under the transition, so this is where you do the IMM transition itself. So to start you hit the add IMM transition button. It'll ask you what you want to do.50:24So you can select the translation type as a user to intersight, Intersight to inter site or miscellaneous. So it will ask you like the 1st option is just generate a readiness report. So this is just to evaluate your environment and then tells you what it what would be look like when the transition happens. You can also move your mouse over.50:40But here to the information icon and that will tell you what steps are involved.51:00You can generate a readiness report plus a push config to intersight. So this is what you will select when you're ready to push the config from your UCSM to intersight. And then the 3rd option is in place UCS domain migration. So this is where you have a fabric interconnect running UCS.51:07Mode and then you want to convert the FI into IMM mode. You can use this option, so basically it will just do the generate readiness report plus the push config but that it will also be responsible for erase the FI on the.51:28Configuration of the existing FI, we configure it into IMM, claim it to intersight, and then push the domain profiles and the policies are onto the FI itself. So the tool can actually run it the entire process for you step by step.51:45Step by step, if you have, in, if you're in doing that scenario to migrate the same FI from UCSM to IMM. But if you're moving from a one FI to a different FI, then you should be using the generate readiness report plus the push config to intersight. And then once you have the policy.52:04Then you will deploy those migrated policies and profiles onto your new fabric interconnect. So to start with, let's just generate a readiness support.52:25So I will select this. So only here it just tells you, what will the two do, it will fetch the users manager configuration, it will do the, you'll configure the migration settings, and then it will convert the users manager config to inter site.52:37And generate a readiness report. So let's quick start.52:57So firstly, it'll ask you where is your UCS source, it can be a UCS manager or UCS central. If you have already added the UCS manager or UCS Central on the device management, then you'll see the list under here, otherwise you can also click on add new UCS manager and then you'll be able to add one on the fly.53:01So in here we'll just select one that we have already added. So click next.53:21And now you'll ask you, what inter site instance you want to migrate it to. You can select an one that you already have or if you don't have one already, you can do a add new account.53:26Or if it's just for the readiness report, you can just say proceed without Intersight device. All right, and then here you specify what are the transition settings. E.g., when you migrate the when you run the migration tool, it will create the policies and then it will append.53:42Them with a prefix. So you can specify if you want to use the UCS domain name as a prefix or you want to use a custom prefix, do you want to create separate VLAN policies and create separate VLAN policies et cetera?54:02Do you want to preserve the chassis and the rack server ID? If you want to, do you want to convert any global service profile and prefer preserve the service profile associations, et cetera? That just depends on how your environment you want your environments to be configured once you're in IMM, so you can toggle these settings as necessary.54:18And then one big feature also is do you want to automatically take converted objects? If you enable this and by default it is enabled, that means that any policies, objects, templates created in inner site.54:40They will have a custom tag attached to it. They will see the tag called IMM migration version, and this is the version of the IMM transition tool itself, and they will also have a tag called IMM transition name with the name of the transition that you have specified when you create the transition. So.54:55This will make identifying what policies or what objects that once other two has run and the object has been created in inter site.55:15You can use the tags to identify them very quickly to separate out from all the other policies that you have created or already exist in, in the site. So for this demo, I'm just gonna leave everything default.55:25And then next you want to select what service profiles or templates you want to migrate. So this will give you a list of all the service profiles and templates that you have in your UCS manager environment. So e.g., I want to select the my templates for my M six.55:42Select those and they will ask you how do you want to map the profiles and the templates into intersight. So you can use a default mapping, so that means that each UCS organization will map to organization the same name in intersight, and then in the root organization.56:01You can specify, you can use a default or you can put in a custom value or you can use the user domain name itself or if you want to map like each of the separate.56:22Organizations or trees in UCSM separately into Intersight. You can use that, you can map like e.g., you can map the route into a new inter site organization and I can map the sub organization in a UC in UCSM into a different organization in inter site if you want to.56:35But for the purpose of the demo I'm gonna choose the default mapping I'm gonna use a UCS domain name as the root organization name and that will join the writing this report, so basically it will pull the configurations from our UCSM, run through all the policies and templates.56:55Do a readiness check and then generate the readiness report. And then once it's done, it tells you it completed the task.57:14So you can just look at the report. It'll give you any warnings and errors like right ahead directly, so you can see what errors and warnings that you have in here or you can click on the view report. So this will bring up the report inside the tool. You can also down.57:22Download the report, if I hit the download button.57:42You'll create a PDF file. So this is the readiness report for this IMM transition tool, so you can use it, save it as a PDF, and then you can send to someone else if they want to take a look at or you can just click on the view report.57:46In the IMM transition tool itself. So what you want to make sure that you go through every section of the report especially if it shows a warning on error. So e.g. like right now begin it will tell you how a compatibility score is good.58:04Another score is also excellent, and then the server positive conflict score is very good. So now it tells you what excellent, very good, good and poor means. And then you can also click on the left hand side to jump to each of the section directly. E.g., if I look at my hardware compatibility so it shows me the fabric in the.58:22The Mac that is a UCSM.58:42What type of FI is, what is the firmware running, is the hardware and the software comparable? E.g., if you've got O code, that it might show up as incompatible, if you got everything running at like four one or like before like 40 zero or if you're running on a server model.58:45That's not comparable, e.g., like I have a regular C 02:20 node in here, but if actually the hyperflex node that it will show up as incompatible.59:04Hardware, and also check if the adapter cards that you have installed onto your server, are they compatible or not? If they're not, then they will give you the corresponding warning to ask you you should upgrade the firmware. Another config.59:13Conversion, you can see the transition settings that you have specified in here and under each section you see there's a warning that you should at least click on it to see what warning does give you. E.g., with this soft UCSM domain doesn't have any time zone NDP configured. So that means that.59:33The domain profile will be created with our NTP policy and then SNMP policy, ignoring the protocol section because IMM only supports UDP, and then push conversion just to make sure that the pools contain the same blocks as source device which may cause.59:53Personal conflict, so that means that while you look at your pool policy in the site, you just want to make sure that.01:00:13There are NO conflicts before you deploy them. And then under the service profile configuration, you can also take a look at it to say, so a power policy name from source power controls to ensure uniqueness, so basically just replace the space with the underscore.01:00:19And under the line connectivity thing here in my example it says that our existing policy doesn't match the PCI order for the interface in this profiles, so that means that when it comes to the LAN connectivity policy.01:00:39We want to make sure that any that you have created, if they have been created, the PCI orders should be set correctly. And then you have create specific lan connectivity profiles, LAN connectivity policy for this profile, and then under the policy.01:00:57The conversion, so land connectivity policy, so is that's all.01:01:16Automatically mapped to the 1st adapter, and then they also mapped to the 1st PCI link. MTU is now under the event QoS policy in IMM. So some of them they will give you the warning and then also here says ignoring redundancy pair connection is not yet supporting IMM.01:01:23Which is what we brought up earlier in the presentation that if you want to do the vnet redundancy pair.01:01:41You should be configuring the next separately under the policy because right now the IMM system tool is not able to create them automatically, so you have to go through that process yourself. And then finally we got our firmal policy, aggressive cooling is not a supported IMM, et cetera.01:01:49So this is the transition report that it will run.01:02:09And once this thing can hit ok, it brings you back to the transition page, and also once a transition has been configured, you can go back to it and it will put you back to the last section that you're in. E.g., like if I haven't downloaded the report and I just click close, I want to go back to it, so.01:02:14You can just go back to the and click on it and that will bring you back to the last section and you can't view report and then you cannot.01:02:34Check the assessment report again or like e.g. in here you see that I have a incomplete transition earlier, I can click on it, and that it will put me back to the section that I was last in.01:02:42So let's say we have, you have already run the generated support once, you have track everything, you have decided that it's good, you are ready to push your inter site. So you can do that. You click on add transition. So two.01:03:00So now I'm gonna select generate the readiness report plus push config to intersight. So it will give me the same screen to telling me what the tool is gonna do. So now the other step is push converted configuration into intersight. So the conflict way push, et cetera et cetera.01:03:21Let me push the equipment to inter site label tags or span sessions if that is. So now I'm going to select the same UCS manager that we have selected earlier, and then the same inter site account.01:03:43We're going to leave the transition settings same as before, which way was the default, and then we're gonna select the M six servers that we have selected earlier, the service profiles and the templates.01:04:00Then we'll just say default mapping with the UCS domain name. So now it will generate the readiness report one more time just to make sure that everything still looks correct. We'll just let it finish.01:04:18Alright, it will give you the same errors and warnings of reviews and then again you should double check the comp readiness report to make sure that everything looks good, still looks if it brought up any errors and warnings earlier when you run the 1st time, just want to make sure that you have addressed it.01:04:36Any errors and warnings either by fixing the policies, updating the configurations or just to write down that any errors and warnings that you have that you need to address later when you are the.01:04:56Transition is executed. All right, so once you are ensure that any all the areas of warnings have been addressed and you are ready to push your inner site, then you just hit next.01:05:10So it will ask you to confirm this is the configuration and the account that you want to push to. You can also download the configurations, so you can download or download it as a JSON file. And then this is basically of all the policies and convert policies and profiles that it will be pushed in the site.01:05:29In Json format so you can actually take a look.01:05:49Get it this larger ok we can see like this is the all the policies and profiles that will be pushed to intersight. This is a JSON format, so you're gonna save it. E.g. it shows that we're gonna push the event.01:05:52Network control policies, you're gonna push the flow control policies, you're gonna push the link aggregation policies, multicast policies, et cetera et cetera. So you can save the JSON file if you want to, in the transition tool, so you can keep it for a later record.01:06:12And then you can also, if you decide, hey, there are some of the policies that I want to modify by hand, you can modify this JSON file if you want to, if you know what you're doing. And then you can use the browse to select the updated JSON file that you can modify, and then you can actually use it to push the.01:06:28The config back into inter site just to make sure that if you are, if you are doing this you have to make sure that you are configuring the.01:06:48Json file properly. So by here I'm just gonna leave it as default, we're gonna use the configuration that has been provided by the tool directly, and we're gonna hit next. So now what the tool will do is to connect to the inter site account that we have specified in here.01:06:56And then it will take the.01:07:16Configurations and then push them to intersight. And you can see on the left hand side there's an operational log which actually tells you what the is doing like e.g. like if we scroll back all the way up top, it will say the settings, it's going to be checking all the.01:07:19The policies from the UCSM side and then now we are pushing all the QoS policy, IMC access policy, et cetera, etc onto inter site, so this part usually takes about a minute.01:07:38Now it says pushing line criteria policy, pushing downic templates, just gonna let you do a string.01:07:53Alright, now pushing the server profile template.01:08:24All right, it has successfully completed, so you can click on the real push summary. So it will tell you what has been pushed and what not, but e.g. like we see that there are some that are skipped, you can click on the freedom icon to tell you why it's skipped, e.g., like it is skipped because it already exists and.01:08:33And now we have all success so you in here it successfully pushed the and then we have zero fail, which is good.01:08:53So if there is any fail, push, you can also click on it to tell to see why did it failed and then you can go back to it to see if you need to reconfigure the policy yourself or rerun the two. So now that we have seen that.01:09:03To the policies and the conflicts are being pushed to intersight. So let's take a look at what inter site is telling us. So now if we go to my profiles, so you will see now there is a domain profile that's Quitrics FS.01:09:19One being created and to make sure that this is the one that is created by the.01:09:39We can modify the view in insights. If you click on the very, very tiny gear will icon in the tab, you'll see the tag column. I select the migration and transfer name.01:09:47So now we can be sure that this UCS domain profile is the one that is created by the IMM transition 25.14 and is created by this particular transition which is what we have named our transition when we run the IMM transition two, so then you can go in and take a look.01:10:02Want this UCS.01:10:22Domain profile is, so it shows you this is my port policy for A side and B side, and then I can also do edit or clone if I want to. I can do edit to take a look at the details of the SI, you can.01:10:24Choose to assign to my domain. I can do it later. I can look at all my VLAN and the configurations. I can click on the eye icon to see all the policies associated.01:10:43I can look at my port configuration, so I got one uplink and one port channel uplink, each server ports, and this is my user domain configuration, so these are my syslog network connectivity, SNMP policies, et cetera, and those will all be.01:10:57Created by the and I can take a look at them at the policy level and if we go to our templates, you will see we got our server our four server profile templates, ok, if you want to make sure that these are being created by the IMN transition tool, I just.01:11:19Enable the two tech columns. So now it tells me.01:11:39These are the these four server profile templates are indeed created by our IMM transition two and the same thing for the policies, if I enable the column, so you will see.01:11:43All these policies are created by this specific transition, so this will be useful if you are doing multiple migrations into your account because like as you see like we also have some other transitions that we have run earlier this, so you see if we see all sorts of.01:12:03Test cases when we are doing our testing, so you can make sure you can now use a filter on the inter site UI on tab I can say I M transition name is set to test demo 002.01:12:23So now it will show, only show me the policies that are for our specific transition to make our management of your policies easier, so then I can see all the boot order firmware policies, LAN connectivity policies that has been created by this specific.01:12:40And I can look at my, e.g., look at my policy to see how everything has been configured, so you can see the template is extreme management A So I can click on it to see what is this created, what type of QoS has been.01:13:02Can selected.01:13:19What network control policies and the network group policies that it's using etc. So you can use this to go through how the links are being used, you can use this to go through all the policies that has been migrated to make sure they are configured properly before you use those server and the domain profiles.01:13:22And then deploy them into your new environment.01:13:42Alright, that is all I want to show you for the IMM transition too. I hope you guys find it helpful. With that said, I'm gonna pass the ball back to Joe to wrap up. Thank you very much, Andrew. Put a great demonstration.01:13:48Thank you Steven. Terrific presentation that we had earlier. For our audience, I have some links that I'm going to paste into chat as I would. Looks like we've got a question that's going on out there that might require some follow up.01:14:06But you're gonna have these links right in the middle of that. Hopefully they'll be useful to you. And I've also got another Slido question here, you can answer in chat. If needed, we're going to take a look at.01:14:26Your environment and want to ask you if you have any current plans to migrate systems from your UCS manager, perhaps you had in the past over to inter site managed mode or IMM, the topic of today's session. Now hopefully.01:14:45With with the thorough presentation that we had from Steven and the very hands on demonstration that we had from.01:15:05Andrew, maybe that turned on some lights for you, you answered some questions, and you've got, you've got a different outlook to answer this question with. We will see we've had a couple of attendees respond already.01:15:13We'll take a look and see how they responded here. Just a second. I'm going to grab those results and you should be able to see those on your screen there. We have.01:15:30Majority of folks answer that, they maybe or to be determined TBD. We've had at least one folk have an answer of NO. Maybe there's some budgetary or change control or other issues.01:15:47Who's weighing in on that decision not to migrate?01:16:06Oh, we don't have anybody that's a definitive yes yet, but we do have a couple of folks there at least that they maybe. So hopefully today's session was a positive influence on that decision. Keep in mind that the recording of this session.01:16:10The links to the document, have been provided to you and they will be posted on our website.
