I guys, thank you so much for joining. Good morning, good afternoon from where we are joining.00:01So before we start the session here, let me do a quick check. One of the panelists if you can help me if my audio is clear, video, everything is proper and you're able to see the slides. Can you someone can help? Okay yeah alright so let's get this started. Alright, so welcome to today's export.00:17Insight series session on catalyst center three.X upgrade best practices and my name is Peter Mike Lungra and I'm a customer success specialist here at Cisco, part of customer experience, and my focus area of work is in the enterprise network space with a focus on Cisco Catalyst Center. And along with me joined today, we have an amazing role.00:37We have, we have Sai and Gerald helping with all your questions.00:58Right, so this is a kickstart journey, so we started off two weeks back by learning about deployment and solution best practices for a new catalyst center setup. And then last week we did take a look at prime migrations, so those folks who are using prime, cisco Prime and kind of want to move to Cisco catalyst center, what are the best practices?01:03This is, you know, to do that.01:23And today we're gonna be focusing on, you know, what's the best practices to upgrade to the newer version, which is the three.X, right? So the goal here is kind of building on one on top of each other, right? So we also gonna be having few more sessions as part of the elevate series, which is gonna be upcoming soon, and you'll be learning more about.01:24In depth view and features of Cisco catalyst center how best to use them.01:44So before we start the session, right? So you may have some questions that come up, so we ask you that please use the Slido section. So just give me 1 min while I launch that Slido. So folks, so if you have any questions during the presentation, please use the slido, put in your Q and A over there and one of our.01:50Panelists will be responding and in the event right if your question is not answered, your information maybe recorded so that we can provide you know with appropriate answer via email at a later time.02:09Alright, so let's get this started. So let's take a look at the agenda for today, right? So we're gonna be focusing 1st on what are the different form factors that is available in catalyst center and what are the scaling requirements, right? And then we're gonna be learned you know why do you actually want to migrate to catalyst center, you know, what's new.02:21When exciting about it.02:39Right, and then our main focus, our main, you know, discussion for today, which is learn how to migrate, what are the best practices, what are the, you know, gotchas, what, what do you need to watch? And then finally be leaving you with some additional resources and links which you can probably use and which will help you in your deployment and plan for your migration.02:41Right? All right, so let's get with the 1st topic here scaling and form factors. Okay, so we still have our single appliances, as you can see on the right hand side here, we have the.03:01I see your question I'm not seeing the slider panel is it the same for everyone on the who's attending or I believe it's it's launched and I believe it should be available. If in case I need of folks who are not able.03:17Able to see the Slido, you can post in your questions using chat as well if that's the case, you know? Or, you know, those folks who are able to see the Slido, you know, posting over there because that's how we are able to track it. It's a bit, it's easier to track it when it's all in in a single view.03:37Oh perfect, thanks for confirming. All right. All right, so again let me get back to this, right? So single appliances, right? So we do still have the medium, large and extra large depending on, you know, again, your needs, right? And you also have the high availability clusters.03:50And if we kind of have a cluster of the three extra large appliances, right? So then we get the three times the scale that we can see our normal Excel appliance. So effectively we what we're doing is we are covering every need for your network and your organization. And we also have the virtual appliances on AWS.04:07We also have the virtual appliance on VMware version, and we also have now the Azure version starting with three.one.five, right? And soon we are planning center version on KBM, so that's gonna be, you know, in the near future, so keep an eye out those who are interested in building out a catalyst center KBM, right? So now all this other.04:26Appliances can be seen in catalyst center global manager. So basically this is kind of a new product, right? And you can, you know, right, if you have many appliances, right? Virtual or maybe physical, all of this can be connected to your catalyst center global manager. And you can have a single view, right? Where we can see all the data.04:46For your individual nodes like your individual catalyst center. But you know you need to watch out for you. You cannot change things from catalyst center global manager. For that you might have to go to the specific catalyst center appliances, but you don't have to log in separately, you can directly, you know, bypass that with the global manager, but you know you still get that monitoring.05:07And kind of one view where we can view all your notes, and that's kind of, you know, something that that was in works and that is like a need of the hour, right? A lot of our requests that did come in like a manager of manager sorts, and that is what we have ascenter global manager.05:26Alright, so these are the numbers, the system scale. So I won't be going through the numbers here, but you can see that we can we cover all types of networks and the appliances that we have, you know, the physical appliances, we have now the DN three, which is the 3rd generation, and soon gonna be we gonna be having the 4th generation DN four appliances.05:44As well, right? So for the 3rd generation that we currently have, we have three variants, we have the DM three.06:03Appliance which is the medium appliance, we have the large appliance and we have the external appliance. And as I mentioned before, if you happen to have a cluster of three nodes of Excel appliances, your scale kind of increases three times than compared to what you have on your Excel cluster. And bear in mind this is only for your Excel cluster, so if you have a.06:11Cluster of large appliances or medium appliances the scale scale still remains the same as the base node.06:31Right? Now question here would be, you know, what happens to the EDN one and DN two, right? So DN one is currently end of life. If you do have a DN one, now would be, you know, the time and we strongly recommend that you find a way to replace it.06:36To take it to DN three or a virtual appliance, whichever you know kind of suits your needs right based on the scale here and DN two is end of sale. It does do support it until 2028, but again, you know, I think it is a good time to plan for the replacement, you know, to be safe and make sure that you have the most capable appliance for.06:53The network.07:13And this scale is as of 237 that you can see over here. Right, so as we have the end of life and, you know, the life cycle for hardware, we kind of have something similar for our software. So for software, you know, the life starts with the recommended release, you know, when the.07:14Releases published.07:34So we have it as a recommended release, and now typically we have twelve months until we stop the software maintenance and then we have another twelve months until we have the last day of support. So this periods can be extended and this is the case with, you know, version 2378 as you can see, right? So these are kind of a.07:35Milestones with regards to the end of software maintenance and the last date of support.07:55So now for the current releases, right, we had the 2377 version back in December 2024, and that was when it became recommended release. And then in around June 2025, we had the 2379 as a recommended release.08:01And as of today, we have the 23710 or 23711 as the recommended release for your Cisco Atlas center. So but what you can notice here, all these releases are expected to be end of software maintenance by, you know, the end of this year, which is 26, right? And the last date of support for this version 237X is expected.08:16To be in June 2027. So this is kind of an indication, right? Why we should plan for that upgrade and why that upgrade to a newer version is important, you know, to keep using Cisco catalyst center, to keep using all the great features that you're currently using in your catalyst center.08:36So now what you can see here is the numbering scheme, so you can see that there are four numbers like 237X So the 1st number is what is part of your major release. It represents a major release and followed by a minor number like three and then another minor number and the final number is your patch number.08:531st, right? So which version you have, so it might be you know bug fixes or whatever.09:13So that is regarding to your 232.three releases, right? So now for the new releases, for the three.X version, so we have a different scheme order which is kind of much simpler and we have just three numbers, right? So you can expect three.one.five or three.two.three or something like that, right? The 1st number.09:18But again will be a major release which kind of, you know, which means significant market value something that is really important that has to do kind of with the whole platform, which is your cisco catalyst center. 2nd number is a minor release and usually it's regarding any new features or, you know, something that's new that's coming in your catalyst center. And the 3rd one is a patch relea.09:38Things, right? So in that case, we usually have bug fixes or you know something that corrects your errors and stuff like that.09:58So those are the three numbering scheme that we can notice starting from three.X.3.x version. All right, so just as an introduction for us at Cisco and for all of you here, right, the foundational requirement for any network that's kind of a unified plant.10:05And this is kind of the need, right? A lot of asks regarding that, you know, we have so many silos, right? Why can't we have a unified platform and that is exactly what we are planning and the efforts are being done in the right direction. And we have got together Cisco and Meraki portfolios, right? So what we are looking now is a common hardware common licensing.10:26And common management, you know, for all our campus deployments.10:46And we've come kind of committed, you know, to meeting all of you, you know, wherever you are because we realize that, you know, all of you might be at different points of your journey, you know, whether it be cloud or on prem or hybrid and we are looking to give that common experience, you know, for all of all of you, right? Across your.10:51Deployments.11:10That's one hardware, one license and one support. And it's something that we just develop and is now available, you know, where we are bringing together this cloud and on prem form factors. So we are looking at catalyst center and Meraki coming together in global overview. So if you go into your Meraki dashboards for those who are using Meraki, right, you now have the ability.11:11Need to add an organization or pull through your catalyst center environment.11:31Right, so you therefore, you know, have one global overview kind of to look at your catalyst as well as your Meraki health of your network, right? So you don't have to have separate this thing, you can, you know, use it in your own single pane or single glass or single view, right? And with this, you know, with this approach.11:35We are now able to troubleshoot, you know, those issues faster, you know, kind of seamlessly transition across and across the platforms. And you can actually cross launch directly into catalyst center from this view that you can see. So this by NO means we we are suggesting that, you know.11:55There's not gonna be Meraki or there's not gonna be center. We do, we're still gonna be having those platforms, it's just that we gotta be getting that unified view so that it's very seamless, you know, for those people who have both in their environment. So it's not kind of, you know, hard for them to log into two different systems.12:10Alright, so another thing that we are looking to do is introduce AI assistant into a catalyst center. So this is currently available in Meraki dashboards and now starting with 23711 and three.one.six if I'm not wrong, it is GA for Catalyst Center as well.12:31Right? So we are moving kind of from a world of dashboards and clis to a world of conversational interfaces. And the Cisco AI assistant in networking is designed especially to help in that. You know, it kind of accelerates operations by allowing you to interact with your network and take in English.12:48And the goal over here is to, you know, the eliminate the knowledge gap. So you know NO longer kind of need to remember this specific syntax for every command or search through thousands of pages of documentation. Another Cisco AI assistant can do the heavy lifting and can provide you contextual help based on your specific network configuration.13:06So here's an example on the right, you can see that, you know, I want to replace my switch and, you know, I just typed in that configuration that I want to replace my switch, I kind of want to put my, you know, configuration a new switch. So you can see the replying here that I'll be assigning the new switch, I'll applying the configuration settings, and once the configurations are.13:25Applied.13:45I'll be running the diagnosis test, you know, to see if the new switch is fully operational, right? So it's the intent is the context, everything that is being understand by and understood by the AI assistant and it's giving you the step by step, you know, what it's gonna be doing, right? So that kind of, you know, this is one of the exciting features that's upcoming in the three.X version and also if.13:46If you happen to have the 23711, you can be able to, you know, see this feature live on that environment and we are constantly developing on the CIA system, so as we have more iterations of our cisco catalyst center version, this is, you know, you can expect this to be more robust and more understanding of your environment, how you want it to behave, learning about your network.14:06It's kind of more closely, right? So this helps a lot if you kind of want to, you know, simplify your deployment. So from an, you know, assistant perspective, how, you know, how does this all bring, you know, how, how does we bring together all of this, right? So we're pulling this all this information from our four.14:26What years of troubleshooting infrastructure network automation and best practices guide, right? So we have this client troubleshooting where you can, you know, all your endpoint clients that are connected to the network, we are able to get a detailed view and also in a conversational manner.14:47And also we have this infrastructure troubleshooting, right? Where we have the AI driven root cause analysis and it gives you that correlation correlation and again through a conversational interface, right? And let's say if you want to, you know, make some automation changes or updates which you kind of.center, but now you are able to do it in the form.15:01For conversation. So we gonna be again pulling all that data through but in a conversational manner. And then, you know, to stop you having to look all the best practices guide and documentation all of that that we have here, right? We can pull that through in a conversation manner so you don't have to look through all of that and it's easier for you to access that information.15:21Yeah, so now coming on to the main topic here. So why should we migrate to Cisco catalyst center, you know, three.one or three.X version except from the fact, you know, the 237 releases are becoming end of software maintenance end of the year.15:40But we do really have some nice new things and a lot of new features that you can expect in three.X version. So regarding the platform itself, right? So we have a new operating system and this kind of reduces the, you know, reduces in half the upgrade process.15:57And also we have a single backup storage, so we kind of don't need two places, you know, one for automation, one for assurance, which we are used to in our 23X versions, right? So here it's gonna be much more simpler. We will just have one platform you know one place where we gotta be you know back uping all our data.16:17Right? And also we can restore, you know, now we can backup in say e.g. we do a backup in three.one.five, we can actually do a restore in three.two.three for that, you know, for that release. That wasn't the case when we're using the 237 or the you know the two.X version.16:37So what we used to recommend back then or like as of today, right? If you haven't upgraded to the latest version, right? The version should match. Whenever you're taking a backup and when whichever, whenever you're restoring, that version should be matching, but that isn't the case for your three.X version, right?16:55So it is you're able to apply a backup and restore to two previous releases, right? So if three.one.five is where you're taking your backup, you can do a restore on three.16 or whichever releases that comes after three.one.six.17:13So this is kind of an evolution of the platform in itself, and this helps us a lot and simplifies, you know, the upgrade process from now on, right? Which wasn't the case in two.X version. And now we also have the site based you know role based access control.17:28And this is one of the features that we were waiting on for many years now, I would say. And now we have it and we'll see how that kind of works in a, you know, in a bit, we'll be explaining it, you know, how that works. But we have that feature, we also have the role based compliance rule based compliance. We also be seeing that in a bit.17:45And again the compliance certification you know for regulated environments, so these are kind of impro improvements that we have made in our security and compliance areas.18:05Now talk about the user experience, right? So that is enhanced by means of having a consistent look and feel across your Meraki dashboard and catalyst center. So the new catalyst center, right? The view and the menu kind of looks very similar to Meraki dashboard and they are very similar and the things are moving towards that we have kind of a.18:14If I feel and look across platforms.18:33So this is intentional so that you know you don't feel that you're using kind of two different platforms and you, you know, you get a seamless view, unified view, and within one platform you can actually, you know, have that integration made. So you're able to see your Meraki and catalyst center devices health in one single view, right? So thereby, you know, we are kind of reducing.18:36In the touch points that you will need and how the discovery example right as I mentioned. So we have this we also have AI, right? AI assistant as a feature and this through this we get comprehensive visibility and troubleshooting.18:56And finally, we have the operational simplicity and sustainability. So the most important aspect here is the energy management dashboard. This is kind of very key, and I'll explain that you know how that solves a lot of things, you know, which which was requested and kind of, you know, you'll feel how why why that is important.19:11Right when I talk about right but yeah those are kind of the key key key things that you can expect or you will get probably, you know, once you migrate over to get the center. So a bit more on the backup and restore kind of as I mentioned, right, in the previous releases, you.19:29Back up something you couldn't restore it to a new version. You had to kind of restore it in the same version. And the purpose for that was actually to re match, you know, the appliance. So if something went wrong, you know, you're using the same version as before the upgrade. But now coming to the three.X, you actually given the, you know, space for two versions that you can.19:49Do a backup, like you can back up on a particular version and for the next two releases you can do a restore on any of the next two releases, right? So that's kind of a simplification that's been done. So it's not very rigid as to how the backup has to be done in the same release and the restores has to be done in the same release. So that is kind of simplified, which will help.20:09A lot in, you know, kind of easier backup and restoring process.20:29Alright, so let's look at the features and capabilities over here. So this is more, you know, what we spoke about earlier, but more kind of, you know, down segregated into the different pillars that we have in catalyst center. So under platform you can see, you know, we have the new site based role based access control, and you can see all of these new features.20:35Features that is there across different pillars for your netops, AI operations, security operations and you know developer operation. So we're gonna be you know focusing on some of this, you know, what are the features that you expect? It's not gonna be a demo, but you know what you can expect, what is this feature all about? So we're gonna be focusing on mainly on the highlighted ones that you can see here on this.20:55Particular slide, right? So starting with your site based role based access control, right? So I guess this has been kind of a super long ask, right? Where, you know, customers were seeming to have more granular control on the catalyst center or, you know, the network setup.21:15But let's say, you know, you've, when they are different sites, you know, the access that you give to the users and that log into your Atlas Center based on the sites, right? This is a long you know ask and I think the one flavor of this was there back in Cisco Prime this is more kind of advanced building on top of that and giving you a much more functionality.21:34Right, so imagine kind of you have one catalyst center, but one of your big sites maybe in Hamburg and the other one would be possibly maybe let's say e.g. Madrid, right? And you don't want the people in Hamburg to see what the people in Madrid see, right? So this.21:54Feature exactly helps, you know, facilitate that. So the introduction of access groups, you know, which can apply a custom rule for each site. So if you want to segregate so you can segregate based on, you know, however you want. If you want your wireless team just focusing on your wireless sites and all that, so you can give them access to all of that. And if you want your wire team to be separated and just, you know.22:10Focusing on your sites where your white devices up, you can give access them to so they are not able to see the other devices nor, you know.22:30Kind of do any configuration or accidentally change something on the other devices. So you can segregate this based on site and segregate this based on what role you have defined, whether it be network admin role or whether it's a super admin role or whether it's just an.22:37Right, so all of these features are included in your newer three.X releases. And to give it more, you know, kind of this is like you're using different regions in the US, right? So if you have west coast, central region and basically with this, you know, you can kind of build that hierarchy of access control now.22:54Within your catalyst center plans. All right. So from the network side, there's also quite a few enhancements and when it comes to the device onboarding and the onboarding workflows.23:14So kind of in the past, right? The discovery has been bit rocky at times I would say. So now with this enhancement, we are moving towards a single unified workflow, so that'll simplify, you know, simplify the whole process and hopefully make it much more slicker and usable moving forward.23:31Right? So we have enhanced the software image management dashboard as well. So in the past, it's been like used to have multiple pages, you know, which is complicated to navigate. I guess you can see with the screenshot also like the revamped GUI.23:48Much more lookalike to what a Meraki dashboard looks like these days, but however, the underneath the hood is still the same features and capabilities that catalyst center has had and it is going to expand in the future. So this regarding to your swim features and how the new dashboard is more kind of very intuitive in your periodic release.24:06Now another announcement which is kind of again a long time ask, maybe also a prime infrastructure recap because we had it before, but is the rule based compliance, right? So basically this is a capability where we can see, you know, maybe we can set a baseline of compliance configuration that should possibly configured on each.24:27Every switch or device or a wireless controller. And basically what happens you know this new checking system will give us an alert if any of the devices is violating this rules and compliances. So that's kind of another great addition that got introduced to one. So this is something you know which can be very useful.24:47For your, you know, if there is any violations or rule based compliance errors, you get an alert immediately.25:07So that you can, you know, rectify those devices. And we also have this new approach regarding the grouping of devices, right? So in the past, I believe we had the hierarchy, the areas, the buildings, the flows, and we assigned those devices, you know, to different buildings or different flows.25:14And based on that, they would get a basic configuration. Let's say you know your NTP server configuration or your DNS server configuration, whatever you had defined in your hierarchy, and if you wanted to, you know, we could push templates and so on. But now with the campus network automation and this new feature, right, we can create device groups.25:33So basically we can have in those device groups, you know, we can have group devices from different sites and we can apply configuration to those devices. So it doesn't have to be in a single site to have those configurations up, right? You can actually select devices from multiple sites and group them together. So let's say e.g. I have nine 200.25:52These switches, you know, dedicated for cameras.26:12And I want to have a specific configuration for those switches, and those switches are across my organization, right? So it could be, you know, 456 or ten different sites. And now I'm able to create those device groups and I can push this configuration to those devices regardless of, you know, their network profiles or regardless of which site they.26:15Belong to. And this you will be seeing it and starting with version three.one.three if I'm not wrong, so that's kind of you know what's available for the you know.26:35Device groups. And you know some of the versions are kind of in beta like in three.one.three, right? You don't see that in your organization, feel free to contact us or reach out to your account team, right? And we can arrange for the enablement of those beta versions.26:45All right. So coming on to the energy management dashboard that, you know, I spoke about, right? So from an AI operation perspective, this is a big one and again a long ask, right? So we have been working on this for quite some time now.27:06And this is the energy management dashboard that you can see on the right hand side here.27:22And this is bigger since, you know, like, I worked with clients, you know, from US, Canada and across Europe as well, wherein, you know, some of the regions where the cost of energy or, you know, the electricity is high. So now with this dashboard, you're actually able to get that visibility into energy consumption of the device.27:26Devices that are connected to your catalyst center. Obviously if you have that in your catalyst center, be able to see it.27:46See this view, see this data, and now we can even break it down into carbon emissions data as well, right? So at which, you know, we're kind of pulling all this information in each country in each site and the energy mixes in each country and you're able to see this, you know, view wherein each devices what their consuming consumption is.27:52And how much they are contributing to. So this is something that can be, you know, useful when you know like all of the companies are moving to a sustainable and green environment, so this is something that you can use to keep, you know, your devices in check or see what's happening in your network environment.28:12Hi, so with the platforms you know both our platforms are getting close together, right? Your Meraki and your catalyst center, right? So we have to also simplified the integration of thousand eyes, right? So there's a new workflow, you know, that kind of helps us to build, you know, use this built in tool or this built in workflow to have, you know, almost like a single sign on to.28:31So rather than like feeling you have to, you know, have two completely different platforms, we now have the integrated workflow in order to see simplify the usage and integration of thousandeyes, right? And in this case it's specifically for switching here. There is a, I believe there's a new integration for thousandeyes with wireless as well.28:51But that is not part of this version, and we are working to get that wireless to be part of, you know, a tightly integrated with catalyst center. That's something that you can expect in here the upcoming versions as well. All right.29:11And this is another ask, you know, which has been, you know, we have come across a lot of times before. So previously when you had this ICE authentication failures and you know you you need to you log into your assurance dashboard, you're able to see actually, you know, a detailed view on what that.29:30Failures about, right? We just able to see, you know, there's some indication failure that your device is running. But now right we can go, you know, we can take this information further from ICE and display that on catalyst center dashboard. So we kind of give you a detailed visibility.29:50On the failure reasons, you know, without like separately logging into your ICE terminal, but basically you can see all of that data in your. We used to log into your ICE and see what's happening. So now that is not needed. You can actually just see that information, you know, what are the authentication failures.30:07The reasons right in your catalyst center environment.30:27Alright, so this is, you know, I know one of the examples for that, right? So all of this detailed view you are actually able to see in catalyst center. Now, the last one to mention here is the event AI analytics outlier, so I.30:34Because you know we had event analytics in the past.30:53However, you know, with a big solution or with, you know, lots of devices, there's lots of notifications and event and what we are adding now is an AI intelligence part to it, which gives you an easier access to the outliers. So I guess, you know, there might be, you know, there might be a certain event and alarm level. It's kind of it's typical.30:56There's NO situation where you probably have, you know, kind of zero problems, right? But is it really a problem or is it just notification or is it a crazy outlier? So that's what, you know, like what information you can get from here. Like if your authentication suddenly spikes in a certain site at a certain time, so then we automatically kind of, you know, thanks to.31:15Right, it gives you an easier access and view to those issues and then help you identify and fix those issues.31:35So kind of, you know, with this intelligence built into your catalyst center, just, you know, developing and, you know, kind of getting getting you that more robust features, you're able to see this in our new solutions. So I hope, you know, with that, you know, those are just some of the features that I covered. There are more features that are there but you know one of the main.31:41Once it just picked cherry picked a few which are kind of, you know, need of the hour, a lot of requests being done for those features. But I hope that, you know, gets you super excited, you know, to learn about this and to start to learn about how to actually migrate.32:02If you are currently using catalyst center, right? So let's take a look at that. What are the best practices that you need to keep an eye on before, you know, you start to do your migration? Right, so let's go easy here and it's gonna be a basic level, right? So there are.32:18Basically gotta be two fundamental situation or two different situation that we you know we we can might come across. One is that you might be entirely a new customer that is only just starting to adopt catalyst center, right? And then of course, you know, there's there's a existing customer with the installed base.32:35So if we go with the easy version, right? We have our new customers and I guess, you know, the good news for new customers is nothing changes. So in terms of deployment, scale, design form factors, everything is like as is before, right? So you don't have to worry when you you know when you're starting with a new customer when you when you're a new customer starting with the deployment, right?32:52You can just start with three.one version and unless I would say you're in a SDA environment, right? We can definitely you know recommend you know start using three.X version and.33:12Kind of avoid that in between step for those people who are actually using catalyst center and on 23X versions. So there's an in between step that you would want to do or you have to do before you do your upgrade to, you know, three.X version, right? For new customers, you can basically start the deployment.33:24With that later site you can deploy that IOSA image and you can start using a3.X version.33:44So from an existing customer perspective, right? The 1st step and the important step here would be to go into 2377 or later, right? The 2377 is the bare minimum that you have to be on which is supported to have that migration over to three.X platform.33:50So, but let's say if you are on 2379 or 23710, that's totally fine, right? The 2377 is what I mentioned is like the bare medium, right? So, sorry. So for customers who are still on maybe 235, so that those folks are the some ones.34:07You need to watch out for you, right? You have a job to get to the minimum of 2377 before you start, you know, do that migration. And the reason is, you know, it's a little less straightforward that we are used to do, you know, Pre we used to, it's a simply when we are upgrading a version from 2377279 or whatever.34:26It's simpler in your you log into your catalyst center UI and you can do it from within this.34:46Within the UI itself. Now, when we are migrating over to which is kind of a new OS in itself, so there is that transition step that you need to do that you need to keep an eye out so that you're effectively doing that migration. It's not a straightforward upgrade that you're doing. So you have a in between step that you actually have to do.34:51Before you do the upgrade. Alright, so why kind of this upgrade is different? So as I mentioned, again, this is a fresh installation of the operating system on a catalyst center, and here we can see, you know, we are deploying the backup, so what we are basically doing is we are converting this backup, whatever you know you're on.35:11Let's say e.g. you are on 2377, so you're converting this backup to three.X format, right? Or three.one format if you're going to that version, right? So basically that's a big change. And now that's the part what we didn't used to do in the past, right? It was a very straightforward simple upgrade that we used to do. Now we do have this conversion of this backup.35:31From 237 to a, you know, eligible three.X format, and then we are restoring this converted backup onto our catalyst center. So this is what is actually happening in this upgrade, right? So that's the only missing piece. The rest kind of is similar and then post once you are on your three.X release, the upgrade process is simple and straightforward, like what is.35:51You used to do.36:11Alright, so to give you more details on the operating system upgrade. It's, you know, the lot of benefits that come with it. And to some extent we are also forced to kind of, you know, do this upgrade because you know the current two version that we are being using for, you know, 237 and you know prior. But kind of is is on maintenance mode it still supported.36:14From a security perspective, however, there wasn't any path, you know, to keep this version, you know, keep using this version, so we have to make this jump and are moving, you know, to an entire underlay to a new version starting with three.X.36:32All right. So let's take a look at the upgrade from 237X to three.one.x. So these are basically, you know, at a high level, four different scenarios that you might, you know, might be in or, you know, might come across, right? So there are a lot of you guys who are using a single appliance only.36:48So I guess, you know, the big task was, you know, how can I upgrade the single appliance where you know wherein I cannot really offload my content anywhere else, right? And 2nd biggest group here would be one with the high availability clusters, so those who have three node clusters set up, so you'll have three appliances kind of joined into a cluster and that's kind of the highest.37:05Priority view in terms of upgrade, right? And then we have good number of customers I just mentioned, you know, the DN one.37:26Which is not supported, right? So I guess in that situation, you definitely have to you know change that server hardware and then so basically you'll have a situation wherein you might have to, you know, switch to a virtual appliance or you might have to switch to a DN two or DN three you know which is supported hardware. And then finally the 4th scenario.37:34Would be, you know, if you want to switch from one VM to another VM to upgrade, you know, to three.x, but in a VM version, so that's our four four different scenarios that you have here. For this particular conversation for today's session, we're gonna be focusing on the 1st scenario, which is how do you migrate your single node, you know, single node deployment, how do you migrate.37:53Great from 237 to three.X That's the focus that we're gonna be doing. But we also leave you with the migration guide where you can see, you know, all these four different scenarios and if you happen to be in you know scenarios, you can see what are the steps, additional steps that you would want to, you know, want to take, but mainly it's gonna be, you know, like.38:13It's gonna be similar to what you will be seeing in the 1st, which is, you know, how to migrate from 237 on a single node deployment, right? So for the next 20 min I'll be focusing on that 1st option.38:33So before you do the migration, right? So how do you actually prepare, you know, prepare your upgrade, right, for DN two and DN three? So let's check the requirements here. So I mentioned that the DN one is not supported. The last release on DN one that is supported is if I'm not wrong, it's 2379. So starting three.X version, it is not.38:45Supported on DN one, so you would have to migrate, you know, switch your platform to either a virtual appliance or your DN two or DN three, right? And now if you want to upgrade to your three.X version, the version that is supported, as you can see over here, these are the different versions that are supported for your upgrade, also 23711 is upgrade you are able to.39:06You know, be on that version and it is supported to upgrade to three.three.1.X versions, right? But these are kind of the bare minimum that you have to be 2377 being the bare minimum that you know you are at least have to be on for your current catalyst center deployment before you do the migration.39:25Alright, on the left hand side you can see the hardware models, so basically all your DN two generation models and if you have your DN three, you know, you're good to go, that's the current and the newest that you have. Only for the folks who are using DM one, they kind of need to watch out, right?39:44Now, if I really, really want to install three.X on my DN one appliance, so the answer still, you know, is NO, right? But one thing is you know what I remember, right? I've been told that you have the appliance for DN one appliance, it kind of makes a good server.39:59To install the VMware maybe, you know, like, say it has that the storage and everything requirements. So just as an hint, you can use probably use it as a lab setup or something if you have the If you have one DN one, you know, still lying around, right? Yeah I'm sorry for that news, but you know DN one is won't be supported for your.40:16Oh. So before we move and, you know, kick off this actual upgrade, right? So there's, there'sn't gonna be a demo because, you know, this is this is something that you will be seeing when you actually do the upgrade. I kind of try to, you know, take screenshots from different parts because.40:38I think that's good that.40:57The upgrade process in itself takes a lot of time, so I'll try to be in detail each and every step and you know what the possible screenshot would look like when you're actually planning, you know, kind of doing that upgrade, right? So before we kick off the upgrade, you know, upgrade wizard, which is kind of needed, right? We highly recommend to do some background checks on the.40:58Cisco.41:19Integrated management controller version, right? And, and the settings that is associated with it, right? So basically ensure that you have at least four.one installed. So if an upgrade is required, right? If you're not on four.one, right? I guess this process, you know, works really well because it's been tested.41:20So please do not ignore these steps if you are not on that minimum required version. So please make sure you 1st upgrade that before you plan on migrating your right? And there's actually a nice description from actually a product development team who are uploaded the video.41:40You're how to upgrade your version on YouTube. So if you are able to search for your, you know, catalyst center or catalyst center YouTube channel I think there's a video where you know show you how to upgrade the if not I'll be possibly later I'll be posting that link as well on the chat so you can have that information you can view how to.41:59Actually upgrade your if in case you do not meet that four.one version, right? But most of you I feel would be, you know, kind of meeting that firmware requirement, if in case you're not, you make sure that you do that is the 1st thing that kind of you do.42:19And also ensure that redfish is enabled, right? That's a communication protocol, you know, that we are needing as part of the upgrade process and also again this is as in shouldn't be a kind of a big thing, right? And so just make sure you double check that it is enabled before you do the upgrade.42:33Right, so apparently they there are very few appliances, you know, that have different naming you know con conventions when it comes to, you know, the drive, right? And also the numbering. So just quickly double check if the naming is as we are saying it should be, right? As you can see here, if not.42:56It's if not you know make sure that it is adjusted so that the naming convention are kind of needs for your setting, right? So those are kind of the main settings that you will need to do or watch out for your on your side of things, right?43:14All right. So now coming back to the main thing before you do the upgrade would be, you know, backing up your data, right? So you can need to configure the backups for upgrade process and there are two options here, right? You can send your backup to a remote host or, you know, for your automation data.43:29So basically, you know, you know, 223X versions, right? We used to have this two separated view where you know the remote host is used for your automation data and the NFS storage was used for your assurance data. Now that is gonna be going away in so we don't have two different places. We can host it in one single place.43:45Where you can host both our automation and assurance data, right? So for now, but you need to keep and, you know, if you want your assurance data backup, you need to, you know, take a backup to your NFS location wherever, you know, wherever, whatever you have in your catalyst center deployment, and if you want to have your automation data.44:05So you need to take that as a backup, alright so as I mentioned, the assurance data, so make sure that configured. That is not needed per se but like for your automation data that is kind of the most important, right? So you would need that you know if you don't want to back up your assurance.44:23Whether that's totally fine, but automation data, keep a backup, you know, do a backup on that on your remote host.44:43All right, so that's how you know you create the backup, you, you know, you schedule or create a copy for that on your, you know, on your server. Now, once we have configured all of that, we are configured make sure that everything is correct. We have configured our backup, we are.44:52Make sure that we have the required copies of assurance if that is needed and also our automation data. Now we are ready to, you know, get started on the upgrade.45:09Right, so our focus as I mentioned here on there's gonna be option one and we gonna be looking at the best practices that we need to, and for the other option is well documented on the migration guide. So if you kind of you know search or do a quick search on google, you know, for the migration guide of catalyst center, that will be the 1st thing that kind of pops up as in case, you know.45:19You need a, you need a link just hit up on the chat and one of our panelists will be able to, you know, paste that link for you so that you can access that migration guide, which is kind of very helpful and you're able to see the different scenarios that I mentioned, right? So if you're in any of those scenarios, you're able to see which.45:40What do you need to do prior to you doing the upgrade? All right, so focusing on option one here, so let's see how the upgrade looks if you are, you know, we are doing this upgrade in the same appliance and let's see how the upgrade looks starting, you know, from version 237.45:57To three.X version. All right. So the process to happen, you know, basically 1st you download and install an upgrade of wizard. So that's, you know, that's a tool that will help you to run through the process the entire process, right? And as part of this upgrade wizard, we are checking all of your cluster details.46:13Like we are kind of double checking, you know, giving you the framework that you have done everything that needs to be done and then kind of the wizard will convert that backup that you took right in your 2377 or 237 and whatever version you have into the new format which is eligible and create this custom ISO that will then be installed and will be used to.46:31So it's like a custom ISO that we are building to reimage your clients and this 1st three steps that you can see here, they don't cause any downtime. So I guess you can prepare, you know, as long as you want for the migration. So there's NO downtime to your catalyst center, right? And as long as all the items, you know, check green early.46:52The actual reimaging where it actually does the ISO installation and all the required packages, that is gonna require some downtime, so if you can see on step four and four five.47:11Again this downtime is in particular to your cisco catalyst center, so none of your network or your devices are gonna be down, only you're not able to access your catalyst center UI when this upgrade happens, right? And post that we do have the post installation checks and reports that you can see if everything has gone according to, you know, what or what the intent was and everything.47:21And looks ok. It's, it's looking green and healthy.47:41So that's kind of, you know, the different steps that it's gonna be following for your upgrade or migration from 2377 version to three.X version, right? But I just want to make sure so I'm gonna be posting your screenshots on the different steps that we're gonna be taking which you know we which we weren't on a high level overview on the previous slide.47:46Right? So one thing that I need you guys to, you know, keep an eye out is on the top right hand side, I'll be mentioning a status, right?48:05At each step, is the appliance up or down, right? If it's green, you know, the appliance is still up and running. As I mentioned, the appliance will be down only when the actual, you know, installation is happening or the re imaging is happening for your catalyst center. Only then is when your appliance is down, that is probably possibly for, you know, 3 h or more depending.48:14On you know how much of data you have backed up and you're gonna be restoring on your so keep an eye out so in each slide you will be seeing that icon on the top right hand side.48:33Okay, so the 1st step here, as I mentioned, is gonna be, you know, to download our upgrade wizard, and so, so when you're selecting a new software, right? So when you're eligible for the three.X release, when you go to that software you usually where you go to upgrade your Cisco software releases, cisco catalyst center software releases.48:43Now you'll be able to see this new, you know, new software that is being suggested like you see you can see in the screenshot here, that's the upgrade wizard. So, so let's say you're gonna be installing that upgrade wizard, right?49:03So as you want to install this wizard when you are installing it, right? Nothing happens to your appliance, the appliance, as you can see here on the top right hand, appliance still up, it's running. It's just that the tool that will need, that you gotta basically need to do the migration or do the upgrade, right? That's the tool that you would be needing to have.49:18Okay, so after the wizard has been installed, it may say that, you know, your system is up to date just for the wizard. And if you then want to access the actual wizard and upgrade process, right? So you will have to kind of log out and log back in. So make sure you you know you're able to access that wizard.49:36So just kind of, you know, sitting and if it automatically doesn't pop up that, you know, the upgrade wizard, you might have to log log out and log back in and you should be able to see through the, you know, three.X upgrade process, right? So once you log out and log back in.49:56You'll be able to see something similar in this view, right? And at this point when you click get started, it's not gonna take down your take down your appliances only starting this particular wizard that you installed, right? So we're gonna be starting the migration now.50:12Right, and the wizard is kind of really cool, right? And it does a lot of things. You can see the checks that's, you know, that's happening. Basically, it's checking that everything that we are suggesting to do, do you think you know you're seeing things like do I have a backup, right? Is that a server configured? Do I have an NFS information, you know, for your.50:28Do we possibly have any air gap configuration? So basically it's kind of a go through.50:48You know, for each and every step that you should be doing before you go and install the new appliance. So you'll see this is just the cluster details, but we'll check the authentication, we'll check the SIMC, we check that you have a backup and so on and so forth. And only at the very last step that is stepped in is where you actually do the reimaging.50:53Kind of a real full proof workflow that your re imaging goes well and as you can still see when it goes through this checkmarks, the appliance status is still up, right? So basically step by step we are checking the credentials, you know, you input your user ID who.51:12You know, whoever is planning to do the upgrade or has a super admin privilege, they are the only ones who can actually, you know, plan to do the upgrade, right? You input your credentials. And then we need the information for the so you input your username and your password here as the next step.51:29And then in terms of backup, right, we need to select which backup you want to use. So there is a check in here that, you know, the backup should not be older than five days, right? If you have a recent backup, you're able to see that and you can be able to select that. And you're also able to, you know, select only if you want, you know, just automation data. So there is a check.51:49Not there if you just want to.52:09Backup and restore your automation data. You're able to do that or if you want to do a complete backup of your automation assurance data, you're able to do that as well, right? So this check is, you know, helpful in place that, you know, the system is checking whether the backup is in good shape, whether it can be actually used to restore your data in three.expose.52:12Right, so now we can post this, we can select the release which we want to upgrade to in your moving to, you know, three.one we definitely we definitely recommend to use whatever is the latest version that is available to you over there, right? So here on the screenshot is it's for version three.1..52:32Three.52:51I wouldn't recommend, you know, going to that particular version. So if you have a3.15 or three.one.six, whichever version you're intending to go to, you select that version and you know start planning the upgrade. All right, so we have done all of those steps. Now we have an option to configure notification, right?52:51So it's like you probably will get an email on the process you know where where what's happening and you know, we might not want to look at the progress bar. I mean usually for software updates and stuff, we do like to see you know how the progress is happening. But when it comes to catalyst center, that time could look like for 3 h or more as I mentioned, right? So we don't want.53:12Want to set and just see at the progress bar, we can enable this notification, we can put in email notifications so when things are happening, you get get it notified and as soon as the upgrade is done, you get notified once the upgrade is you know done and finish I will go to log into your three.X version, right? So this is a good tool and good handy way where you can, you know.53:32See what's going on, but again, you don't have to be there to monitor what's happening. Right, so once you're done through all these checks, you know, you'll get a summary page and basically this is where you get a last chance to review everything what you have configured.53:53And if you are happy with the input, you know, you can click on next, but if anything was missing or you have to go back, you know, some settings, please go back and refresh. This particular wizard, you know, it can run multiple times. It's not like kind of a one off thing that will just pop up and it will just go. So yeah, we do understand, you know, some of the checks that is there, you know, it kind of takes some time.54:09And maybe and you know it's a big thing that you're migrating from 23X version 23.x version, so you just want to make sure that everything is proper before you actually kind of hit on that re image appliance, right? So whenever you feel confident that everything is set up properly, everything is green check mark comes up and all of that.54:29So that's when you can you can decide you should be proceeding, right? So review all the details in the summary page. All right, so if you're happy and then you can proceed next. So if there's any critical error that, you know, you know, that the system flags, it won't even let you proceed, right? It'll flag that and you need to make sure that that is correct.54:46Define before you kind of proceed.55:06Right, so make sure and if there's kind of any warning, right? You can, you know, ignore it, but maybe depending on the what the warning is about, you might want to resolve it and not run into trouble later, right? So just really make sure that you read about the warning and take it seriously because you know if.55:08Things goes out when you do the upgrade, you don't want to be the one that's ignored the stuff for that bad reason, right? And finally towards the end, like the last step is the final confirmation giving you this, you know, the information like from the backup, what backup you selected the selected release, which he.55:27The you know is going to be re imaging and, you know, having that installed. So once we are on this particular screenshot of one, once we are on this particular page, we can click on proceed once we are here to you know.55:46So with this, before, you know, the installation starts, we are basically taking your backup, now your backup is gonna be taken and you're gonna be converting into a3.x version, right? And post this we build this custom ISO as I mentioned right based on your data that is your backup data. We're gonna be building this custom ISO that is gonna be installed.56:02And which will be then used to deploy into your system.56:22Alright, so assuming that everything we've done here so far, you know, passes perfectly, it's all green check mark. We are good to go. Now we reach at a stage, you know, where there's a point of NO return, right? We are now ready, we are ready to, you know, press that final button, right? So once you execute from this point, you can't go back, right? This is where the actual.56:26Question will happen.56:45So so far if you have noticed all the sites I can I showed, you know, the status the appliance status was up. Post this is when your appliance status goes down, goes down. None of your, again, none of your network or your network devices gonna go down. It's just that you won't be able to access your UI at this point of time when the image is happening.56:46Alright, so here you can see the appliance status has gone down and now the upgrade process is, you know, it's starting, it's progressing, and depending on again depending on the size of deployment, it can take 3 h or more, right? So.57:08Now would be the time good time to have a lunch break or something, you know, whenever you're planning that deployment. And once, you know, the image is happening and we are loading the new software, right? We will be loading your, you know, backed up data which is format, and then we're gonna be using that to reboot. So it does take.57:23There's NO fixed time, right? That does take a variable time based on how much data you have backed up and also, you know, like which particular version you are intending to go to, right? But bare minimum is what we've seen as 3 h is what we have seen.57:42Alright, so once it's finished, you can go back and log into your catalyst center. So this is gonna be your new UI, which is, you know, your three.whichever version you've selected, but starting from your new UI.57:58Alright, so and actually if you it gives you a warning, you know, the backup schedule has not been carried over once you know once the upgrade has happened, right, it gives you this warning and it also generates the platform upgrade report, right? So hopefully it all kind of looks green and actually now you're kind of finished with the upgrade task to three.X version.58:14So now I'll I'll tell you what, you know, the backup schedule, you know, what that warning is all about, right? So, but essentially what you have done, you know, your upgrade is complete, you are good.58:33To use the three.X version, everything is done and completed. If it's green check mark, you don't have anything to worry about and you can start using your center from on three.x, right? And this is gonna be a new login screen and those who are familiar to the Meraki side of things, right? So you might notice it's a similar UI and that's, you know, that's in line.58:42And intentional with what we are trying to achieve and what our efforts are focused on, kind of unifying both platforms and have a seamless user experience.59:02All right. So the post upgrade report, so once you know the upgrade happens, you get to see all of this, you know, details. So this give do give this, you know, post upgrade report a read and see everything looks good over here. And finally for the backup schedule, right? As noted earlier, the warning, right? It was not carried over, the backup schedule, whatever you had if you had that weekly.59:13Daily, monthly or whatever it is. It's not carried over to the three.x version. You might have to create a backup here manually. So 1st time, the 1st thing that you might want to do post upgrading to three.x version, you might want to schedule that out.59:34Because those schedules will not be carried over from your previous version. So essentially this was quite a long piece, you know, with all these screenshots, but I guess that gives you a visual expectations, you know, what you can expect when you do the migration and what's gonna be, you know, what are the things that you need to watch out for?59:47Right, and I hope you understand that it's more, it's not that complicated than before, but you know you still need that additional in between steps like installing that upgrade wizard and, you know, converting that backup, which is done by the upgrade wizard. But yeah, those in between steps that is needed before you upgrade to but.01:00:06Once you are upgraded or on that particular version, you don't have to worry about it. It's gonna be similar as how you should do your upgrades, you know, minor upgrades.01:00:26You need just need to log into your UI and then from you know as and when there is a new release that is recommended, you can upgrade from your UI, right? So, but I hope, you know, you see and appreciate how much effort you have done, you know, to make it as easy as possible for you guys to, you know, upgrade into a new OS.01:00:35Alright, so like I mentioned, this is one scenario that we covered, like if any of you are in the other buckets, right? So, maybe, you know, upgrading your three node cluster or maybe using air gap solution or if you have, you know, restoring your multiple scenarios, right? So if you, if you do.01:00:54You happen to access that migration guide, you should be able to see what are the additional requirements.01:01:12Depending on which scenario you are currently, you know, you are currently running into. But for the upgrade from an upgrade standpoint, those are the things that you, you know, that we just went over the screenshot that we went over, the steps that we went over. Those are the things that you need to watch out before you migrate from 237 all the way to three.X version.01:01:17And if already not done so, if one of the panelists can, you know, help post the migration guide link in the chat, that will be helpful. Alright, so we are almost towards the end of the session here. But before that, you know, there's some things, right? We have the system profiles, right?01:01:37Here we have tons of profiles like it's kind of a repository of best practices and it provides you different industry verticals and depending on which vertical, you know, you're currently on with the manufacturing or healthcare, you know, you're you're able to see what similar customers doing, what are the best practices they are trying to do, you know, how they are implementing Cisco catalyst center.01:01:56In their environment. And that is something that's very helpful for you guys to you know.01:02:16Get inspired from and also deploying it in your environment as well, right? So that's something that you are able to access in your Cisco validated profile on cisco.com and the final call to action here would be, you know, the three dot.01:02:21This year for an it's an early release and I believe the recommended release is directly gonna be three.two version. We don't have a date for now, but I I hope that I mean I'm hearing and hoping that the GA release is gonna be soon on the three.X version.01:02:37But if you want to, you know, test all the new features and you know see what it looks like, this release you can actually you you can do the migration, you can do the upgrade and it is fully tax supported. So if you do plan on migrating, request that early access with your account team and take advantage of white glove service that is available for the migration.01:02:56So, you know, there's a support team that will be consistently helping. You on the call while that migration is happening and you know what basically going from end to end. So make sure you take that advantage, reach out to your account team and if you want to, you know, sign up for any of those particular catalyst center version, so make sure that let your account team know about that.01:03:16Right, so also remember the key features that we did mention, you know, we did cover on our slides like the site based role based access control, rule based compliance, you know, your NH management dashboard and AI system. All of these newest and greatest features are gonna be available starting from three.13.four.01:03:37So if that's something that's your interest and that's something that you know you would like to you know have it in your environment, so make sure you know you plan for that migration and sign up for that early field, you know.01:03:56Alright, so, I mean that was it from a migration standpoint. I'd like just to take a, you know, before we wind up for the day today, I'd like to grab your attention for a final quick 2 min here and this is just to highlight a product which is complimentary to our.01:04:11Networking needs and, you know, demands which is Cisco IT. This is by NO means it's not a sales pitch I am trying to, you know, educate folks who have joined here just about a platform which you know, which is something that you can find useful and there are available resources for that as well, right? So we all do know about, you know, the.01:04:28Pain of siloed data and manual processes, right? I, you know, I worked for Cisco partners before Cisco and I was a customer before that as well, right? So believe me, when I say I feel the pain, you know, maybe you have some expensive asset management tools, maybe you have a spreadsheet of serial numbers, assuming, you know, you can find it when you want actually.01:04:48You wanted. So too often you find out about your aging hardware or software, this can be, you know, with respect to your catalyst center or your devices or across the board, right? Whatever, you know, Cisco equipments that you have, right?01:05:07So tool sometimes too late when you find about it's already out of support or out of life or, you know, you know, end of sale, whatever it is, right? So Cisco IQ is kind of built to cut through all the noise that is there and it is not just for one specific platform, it is across the board for all your platforms, all your devices, whether it's the data center.01:05:20Switches or Meraki or whatever it is, right? So you're able to get a detailed view on, so we are kind of, you know, collecting all this 40 years of Cisco expertise telemetries and best practice and kind of build into this platform which is the newer platform which is Cisco IQ. So in short, if I just want to highlight, you know.01:05:40What does.01:06:00Platform basically unlocks for you, you know, it gives you a complete clarity on what current asset you have and across your whole Cisco footprint, whether it be software, hardware. It gives you proactive resolutions which is AI driven that kind of flag issues before they can kind of become issues, right? And it also gives you an.01:06:01Like contextualized professional services like having a Cisco expert always on your team.01:06:21Right? And the best part is all that is included in your existing software support, right? I'll share that link with you once I have I do have the recording because you know to post it on the website it does goes through some compliance check and it goes through some editing and digital team, which is not under our control, so it does take some time, probably a week or so.01:08:55So expect a delay it's not gonna be happening immediately, but in case you need.01:09:14You need an access to a copy of the slide deck that is that was presented today or maybe in access to the recording, please do leave that survey feedback and we can, you know, reach out to you.
