Hello everyone. Today we're going to talk about moving from traditional UCS managed mode over to inter site managed mode or as we call it IMM in short. By the end of this session, you will have a clear picture.00:05Sure of what IMM is, how it compares to what you are used to, and most importantly, how do you transition smoothly to inter site managed mode? So let's dive in. So what is inter site managed mode? At its core, it is a brand new.00:20Software stack or fabric interconnect. Think of it as a modern alternative to the UCS manager and the UCS managed mode. Many of us have been running the UCS managed mode for years now. So this mode lets you configure and manage your entire UCS infrastructure.00:39But through the inter site platform. What is really nice is that it is built on the standards based on the foundation using the Redfish model. So it is designed to be more open and future friendly. Also, it gives you a one place to manage your standalone servers and your.00:59Fabric interconnect attached systems in the single pane of glass. Now let's compare the two sides one to the other. If you have worked with m or UCS managed mode, you already know the building blocks.01:20The policies, the profiles and the templates. The good news is that IMM also uses the same exact concepts. So your existing knowledge carries over to IMM as well. The difference here is in how they're organized.01:37IMM takes those familiar pieces and arranges them in a more modular flexible way that is managed centrally on the cloud. Or it could also be in your environment if you are using an appliance.01:54So you're not learning everything from scratch, you're just applying what you know in a more scalable structure. Now let us move on to see how this transition will happen. So the transition happens through the IMM transition tool.02:09This is where it gets really practical. Moving from one mode to the other might sound like a lot of manual work, but this tool here is designed to solve that issue. It automates the migration for you. For each server, you can see the examples in this diagram here as well.02:27The server name, the identities, information like the UUID, Mac WWN, the boot configuration, the settings, even the firmware details, all of it gets carried over to inter site.02:46It also takes your existing identity pools and maps them to new identity pools in IMM, and it converts your service profile templates into server profile templates on inter site. The bottom line is that this tool saves you a lot of time and drastically reduces.03:01The chances of human error during the migration. Now enough of talking, let me show you how this actually works. I'm going to walk you through the IMM transition tool now. We will start by connecting our source UCS domain.03:21Then select the profiles templates, and we will bring them over to intercite. And before we commit anything, the tool also gives you the chance to review what is going to be migrated so that there are NO surprises. Now we will see how we can.03:38Migrate from a use case manager managed environment to an inter site managed environment. So the tool that will help us to do that will be the IMM transition tool. How do you get that is to go to UCS tools.cloudapps.cisco.com. Under that you will get to see the IMM transition tool.03:54And you can download it for a new installation or you can also download the up, upgrade package. So once you download and deploy it, the tool will look something like this. This is how the transitions will look like. You have device management where you can claim.04:12The targets from where you want to transition and the target to which you want to transition. So the users manager and the inter site. Similarly, you have the option of software repository. You can keep your OS files over here and also transition them to inter site if required.04:28Now this is the UCS environment that we will be using for the transition. It has four UCSC series servers and this is the inter site account on which we will transition it. Currently, the fis are claimed onto inter site onto this inter site account, so we will remove that because that is the 1st step that we need to do. If it is claimed on any inter site account, we need to.04:44Unclaim it from their inter site account. That's what we are doing currently. After we do that, we can go to the users manager and have a check on the device connector that it is unclaimed, so we are good to go. One more thing that we need to ensure.05:04Is if we want our passwords to remain intact while it goes in the policies in inter site as well, we need to ensure that the password encryption key is set. Now to set the password encryption key, you need to give the key over here.05:19You just need to ensure that you remember this key so that that will be used to retrieve the passwords in use inside as well. Now we go ahead with the transition. We will be using the in place UCS domain migration. This is the new.05:36Feature which supports a lot of automation in terms of the transition itself. 1st step will be to add the users manager. If you have already added it, try to refresh the configuration and inventory once so that the latest data is available to the transition tool. This will take a couple of minutes of time. This video is spread up.05:52You can see the progress on the right side of your screen as how the fetching of information is going on. Once it is done, you can close it and then you need to add your inter site account. Again, we have also done it already in the past. Here is where you select on the transition settings, any changes you need to make to the tags, any options you need to.06:13Edit, you can do it over here. You need to change the profiles, the fabric policies, everything is possible on this tab. Then you select which profiles and templates you want to migrate. Here we have four service profiles, so that's what we will migrate, then we need to also.06:33Map the organization of UCS manager to the organization of inter site. We are mapping the route on UCS manager to the default on inter site account that we have. Then it will create a gen readiness report which will have details on.06:51How the transition will look like if it, if we proceed with transition. If you have warnings errors over here, do try to mitigate them before going ahead with the transition. In our case, it is a lab environment, so we will ignore the warnings and we also need to acknowledge that we are ignoring the warnings once you do that.07:08Then we can proceed with the next step. Here is where you push the configurations of your users manager to inter site. Now this will again take a couple of minutes of time. You can see the progress on the right side of your screen. It will depend on how big of your transition is.07:26So once the push of the configuration is done, you can close this and move on to the next part, which will be the backup of your UCS manager. Before we go ahead and erase the configuration from your fis of the UCS manager settings, it is always recommended to take a backup.07:41So this is also integrated within the tool itself. You can take a backup using the tool. So again, this will take a couple of minutes of the time depending on how big the backup is. Once the backup is completed, you can download the backup also.07:59From the download button which you can see over here. Okay, the backup is complete. We can close this and download the backup so that we can keep it handy in case something happens during the transition. Once the download is done, we then move on to the configuration part.08:16Before we go ahead with configuration, it will check some of the things whether the servers are powered on or is it claimed on inter site, is the reachability working fine? So in our case, the servers are still powered on, so we will power them off quickly.08:36To Ensure that all of them are powered off.08:56Then we move back to the tool and retry it and we can see everything is verified. Then we go ahead with it is configuration. It will the configuration on their files and make it ready to be set up in inter site managed mode. Now to set up.09:04The inter site managed mode on the fis ensure you have a console access to the fis. So what you can see over here is the console access to the fis and the fis are rebooting, so once the fis reboot, we go ahead with the configuration of them.09:22So this tool itself will give you the configurations that you need to do. If you have a DHCP server, you can do it automatically through there. If not, you can do it manually, which we will do over here. We give all the inputs that we can see on the screen.09:52The password is something that we need to provide on our own. We select which fabric interconnect it is. We give the management IP address, subnet gateway, the DNS IP.10:07So these are the configurations we have done. We want to ensure that all looks good and then we apply it so this will again take a couple of minutes of time to get done.10:23Then on the next FI once we select console, it will automatically fetch the configuration from the FI if you just enter the password, it now you can see all the configurations are fetched, you just need to provide its management IP. Once you do that, you apply the configuration.10:41And it will again start applying the configuration that it fetched from the other effect, so the configurations are.11:01Getting done. This will again take a couple of minutes of time. We go back to the tool.11:18Once the configuration is done and both the files are ready.11:38We go ahead with claiming it to inter site once we claim it, then it will start creating the domain profile.11:41And deploy it as well. So currently it's deploying the domain profile to the fis with the configurations. You can see on inter site as well that the domain profiles are getting.11:58Deployed on their files, you can see that their files are already claimed onto inter site and the servers are also there showing up once the domain profile gets deployed, it will do the discovery of the servers and then you can see the servers as well.12:17So now the servers are starting to populate once the discovery has started. Now, after the discovery is done, the IMM transition tool will stop there. If you want to go ahead, you will have to do the next step manually that is to assign the server profiles to the.12:36Servers that are there on inter site, that is one thing that you will need to do manually. So now the discovery is going on Okay so the discovery is done. Now you just deploy the server profiles on the servers.12:56And then the service will be now ready and fully transitioned from your UCS manager mode to the inter site managed mode. So this is what the.13:16Tire demo of time and transition tool is. Hope this was useful.13:36
